On May\u2019s first weekend, Vintage Racecar<\/em>\u2019s European team was on hand to greet many subscribers and friends, old and new, at the Donington Historic Festival. The first of the event\u2019s three-days offered challenging weather conditions from sun to heavy rain \u2014 and even snow \u2014 as all four seasons played out in just one day! However, with a unique \u201crevolving paddock,\u201d each day classic motorsport fans were warmed and treated to a vast array of competition cars from the 1920s up to the 1990s. Changing track conditions ensured drivers had to draw on all their experience and guile as they vied for victory on the demanding Donington circuit, treating spectators to truly exciting racing action.<\/p>\n

The rare and valuable historic competition machines were in safe hands, however, with drivers such as Le Mans winner Jackie Oliver and Touring Car giants John Cleland, Tim Harvey and Steve Soper representing earlier generations of racers, and present-day BTCC stars Andrew Jordan, Matt Neal and Colin Turkington showing that today\u2019s drivers are just as comfortable behind the wheel of a decades-old racecar as they are battling it out in the latest works offering. Andrew Jordan and his father Mike took the checkered flag in the final contest of the meeting, steering their Austin A40 \u2014 rebadged Austin GT<\/em>40 for DHF \u2014 to victory in the HRDC Touring Greats race.<\/p>\n

Other well-known faces spotted around the paddock included musician Chris Rea, who turned in an arresting performance in his Morris Minor \u201cPolice\u201d car, and motorsport pundit Tony Jardine, who took to the track in an E-Type for the Jaguar Classic Challenge. Another familiar face to fans of \u201970s and \u201980s motor racing \u2014 Tony Dron \u2014 was on hand to present the trophies for the inaugural round of Motor Racing Legends\u2019 Tony Dron Trophy, incorporated within MRL\u2019s packed Historic Touring Car Challenge grid.<\/p>\n

The Festival enjoyed a mass presence of pre-war sports cars in the \u201cMad Jack\u201d race, and the DHF debut of the Pre-\u201980 Endurance series, which pitted Lola T292 and T282 against Chevron B19 and March 75S in a fantastic battle. It was also Lola vs. Chevron (though this time T70s and B8s) in the mammoth, three-hour HMRN \u201c1000K\u201d race into dusk on the Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Paddock visitors had an immense amount of metal upon which to feast their eyes, ranging from the fabled ERA R5D \u201cRemus,\u201d one of the iconic early Grand Prix cars taking part in the HGPCA\u2019s Nuvolari Trophy contest, to Rickard Rydell\u2019s Volvo S40 from his 1998 BTCC title-winning season, which returned to racing for the first time in 18 years for the HSCC Super Touring Car Trophy.<\/p>\n

Other Festival highlights included lively demonstrations of historic Formula One cars and Group B rally cars, the car club displays in the infield, and dozens of competition cars taking to the streets of Castle Donington village for the now-traditional village parade. The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight joined in the fun, sending \u2014 most appropriately, given the weather \u2014 a Hurricane to entertain the crowds.<\/p>\n
