M\u00e4kinen is perhaps best known for his pair of \u201chat tricks\u201d of consecutive wins in the 1000 Lakes Rally in Finland \u2014 in 1965, \u201966 and \u201967 \u2014 with a works Mini Cooper S, and in Great Britain\u2019s RAC Rally \u2014 in 1973, \u201974 and \u201975 \u2014 with a factory Ford Escort RS1800.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e4kinen\u2019s rally debut came in the 1959 1000 Lakes Rally where he drove a Triumph TR3 with his brother Harri as his co-driver. By 1962 he had come to the attention of BMC rally boss Stuart Turner, who gave him a guest outing in Great Britain\u2019s 1962 Royal Automobile Club Rally, where he won his class (above). Signed to the team immediately afterward, he took his first major international win on the 1964 Tulip Rally in Holland, then opened his 1965 season by putting in a flawless, penalty-points-free effort to win the Monte Carlo Rallye with Paul Easter as co-driver. He repeated the victory in \u201966, but was denied the win when disqualified by a dubious application of the lighting regulations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-761226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"625\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin-1024x593.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin-100x58.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin-770x446.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Makinen-71-RAC-Image-by-Pete-Austin-293x170.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a>When BMC withdrew from rallying, M\u00e4kinen followed Turner to Ford, where he notched his three RAC wins. By that time the World Rally Championship had been established, so with his 1000 Lakes triumph in 1973 added to his RAC hat trick, he\u2019s credited with four WRC victories. He won the Finnish Rally Championship three times, and in the later days of his career also drove for Toyota, BMW, Fiat and Peugeot before retiring from the cockpit in 1981. Along with Rauno Aaltonen, he helped pioneer left-foot braking.<\/p>\n<p>His talents with a wheel were equally evident away from the forest as he was also a three-time touring car champion in Finland, won the ice track championship six times, and won the inaugural Round Britain Powerboat Race in 1969. In later years he ran for the Finnish Parliament, but lost in a close vote.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e4kinen was one of the first four inductees to the Rally Hall of Fame, which is part of the automobile and road museum <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mobilia\">Mobilia<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kangasala\">Kangasala<\/a>, near the central <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Finland\">Finland<\/a> city of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tampere\">Tampere<\/a>. The Hall of Fame was opened in 2010 with four inductees: <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Erik_Carlsson\">Erik Carlsson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paddy_Hopkirk\">Paddy Hopkirk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rauno_Aaltonen\">Rauno Aaltonen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timo_M%C3%A4kinen\">Timo M\u00e4kinen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To his family and his friends throughout the sport, <em>Vintage Racecar<\/em> extends its deepest sympathies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rallying\u2019s original Flying Finn, Timo M\u00e4kinen, passed away last Thursday at the age of 79. His father worked for famed race car builder Kurtis Kraft, and later as a mechanic at Indianapolis and on the Championship Trail for drivers such as Rex Mays, Ted Horn, and Troy Ruttman. John has written about racing for more than 25 years, first at RACECAR before helping found both On Track and RACER, overseeing the latter for a dozen years. He was also motorsports editor at AutoWeek and editor of SportsCar, and his book The Atlantic Championship celebrates the first 25 years of Formula Atlantic.
