Last Sunday, August 20, 204 of the most prized collector cars in the world rolled onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf \u2014 the famed 18th<\/sup> fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links \u2014 to take part in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Originally a small social event paired with a road race through the pine and cypress forests of Pebble Beach, the Concours has grown into the top-ranking collector car competition in the world.<\/p>\n

This year that competition was won by the 1929 Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer owned by Bruce McCaw (above, photo courtesy of the Pebble Beach Concours d\u2019Elegance), which rolled onto the fairway fresh from a restoration in the New Jersey shop of Steve Babinsky and went home with the Best of Show trophy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis Mercedes-Benz S Barker Tourer is a combination of speed, style and power,\u201d said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. \u201cSomehow these three elements \u2014 along with those fantastic torpedo running boards \u2014 become the very definition of elegance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve had the car for several years,\u201d said McCaw, who hails from Bellevue, Washington. \u201cThe question was whether or not to restore it. I always hate to restore something that doesn\u2019t need it, but we finally found enough pictures that we knew the car needed to be restored.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the final judging circle for Best of Show, Bruce was up against his brother John who, with wife Gwen McCaw, competed with their 1957 Ferrari 315 S Scaglietti Spyder. Also in the Winner’s Circle was a 1932 Packard 906 Twin Six Dietrich Convertible Victoria owned by William E. (Chip) Connor of Reno, Nevada.<\/p>\n

The 2017 Pebble Beach Concours drew its 204 cars from 15 countries and 31 states, with the total including 54 first-time entrants. The event raised more than $1.6 million to help people in need. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, the\u00a0primary charitable partner of the Concours, these charitable funds will benefit more than 80 local charities.<\/p>\n
