The accident occurred in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> century farmhouse in Surrey that he shared with his wife Aline. He was 72.<\/p>\n<p>Bell, who once described the secret to his success as \u201chard graft,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>initially sold Jaguars for John Coombs before opening his own Lotus dealership, Bell &amp; Colvill, in 1970 in partnership with Martin Colvill. They didn\u2019t just sell the cars, but would also modify selected examples for customers, including offering a turbocharged version of the Lotus Esprit before the factory did.
