{"id":497562,"date":"2018-05-08T16:36:59","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T16:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=58460"},"modified":"2023-12-20T09:55:48","modified_gmt":"2023-12-20T09:55:48","slug":"ss-wins-inaugural-greenbrier-concours-delegance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/ss-wins-inaugural-greenbrier-concours-delegance\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenbrier Concours (2018) &#8211; Inaugural Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first time for any concours is always a challenge.\u00a0 When the weather complicates the plans, it can become chaotic.\u00a0 When the announcement of The Greenbrier Concours d\u2019Elegance appeared, it was a must do event.\u00a0 The Greenbrier is an historic resort in White Sulphur Springs in the mountains of West Virginia.\u00a0 Visitors began coming to the area to \u201ctake the waters\u201d since 1778.\u00a0 It remains one of only two \u201csprings\u201d resorts left, the other being The Homestead about an hour away in the Virginia mountains.\u00a0 The Greenbrier is also the site of a facility that got the name \u201cthe bunker\u201d thanks to a slightly misinformed newspaper reporter.\u00a0\u201cThe bunker\u201d is actually a fallout shelter designed to protect Congress from fallout during a nuclear war.\u00a0 Long declassified, it now serves as an interesting side tour for people staying at the resort.\u00a0 It also has a room now called the \u201cExhibition Room,\u201d which became important to concours entrants and spectators.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-601485 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71.jpg\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA \" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/20180506-AA169_70_71-293x195.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a two day event, much as Amelia Island has become.\u00a0 Saturday was &#8220;Car Club Day,&#8221; and it was held on the golf course.\u00a0 The threat of rain and the actual drizzle kept some people away.\u00a0 The cars hardly made a dent on the amount of space they had set aside for them.\u00a0 One hotel employee said she counted about 75 cars, but even at that number, there was room for many more.\u00a0 The outlook for Sunday was horrible, but there were breaks in the rain forecast for late morning through early afternoon, so, on Saturday afternoon, the organizers said it was a go for the golf course.\u00a0 Sunday morning, it was raining so hard that speeds over 50 were impossible on the interestate.\u00a0 In town, the river was nearly out of its banks.\u00a0 The entrance from the road to the golf course was flooded. After lots of rumors spread among the entrants, a decision was made to put half the 100 or so entrants on the circle in front of the hotel and half in the &#8220;Exhibition Hall,&#8221; \u00a0The latter required some effort on the part of the drivers because of all the support columns around the room.\u00a0 Greenbrier employees and even concours judges helped push some of the cars into place.\u00a0 Being inside made the noises quite entertaining.\u00a0 And it got very interesting when a McLaren Can-Am car drove in &#8211; what a noise!\u00a0 It got everyone&#8217;s attention!<\/p>\n<p>In the end the Best of Show honors went to <strong>Carl Baxter\u2019s 1934 Swallow Sidecar (Jaguar) SS1 Saloon<\/strong>, with the class winners including:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 1<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Brass Era Cars: 1911 Stanley Steam Car, Model 63 owned by Eric Arbuckle<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 2<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Classic Cars: 1928 Isotta Fraschini 8A SS owned by Peter Boyle<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 3<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Pre-War Production Cars: 1934 Swallow Sidecar (Jaguar) SS1 Saloon owned by Carl Baxter<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 4<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Post-War Production Cars: 1953 Mercedes Benz 220 Cabriolet A owned by Martin Stickley<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 5<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Foreign Sports Cars: 1960 Triumph Italia 2000 GT owned by Alan Anspaugh<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 6<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Exotic Sports Cars: 1966 Ferrari 275GTB owned by John Gerhard<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 7<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 American Sports Cars: 1957 Ford Supercharged Thunderbird owned by Marvin Hill<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 8<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Preservation Cars: 1967 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Mark Davis<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 9<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Race Cars: 1957 Ferrari 500-TRC owned by David Carte<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 10<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Muscle Cars: 1967 Ford Shelby GT350 owned by Hunt Palmer-Ball<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class 11<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Vipers: 2017 Dodge Viper owned by Bob Miller<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_601491\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-601491\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6464.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-601491 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_6464.jpg\" alt=\"1954 Siata 300 BC of William Lightfoot.
