Dr. James Norton will offer reflections on perceptions and realities of\u00a0racing safety in the initial post-war era. Norton served as track medical\u00a0director in the early days of racing in Watkins Glen. At that time, the races\u00a0were held on public roads and through the streets.<\/p>\n
Mike Semel will discuss the progression of medical and track safety\u00a0practices in the modern racing era. A nationally renowned safety expert\u00a0and consultant, Semel served as Safety Director for the United States\u00a0Grand Prix, for Watkins Glen International, and traveled with the CART\u00a0IndyCar Safety Team for 19 years.<\/p>\n
Addressing historical technological milestones, Randy States, son of the\u00a0late Dr. John D. States, will offer insight into his father’s pivotal role in\u00a0translating safety lessons learned in racing to the broader field of\u00a0automobile safety – most notably the seat belt.\u00a0Randy\u00a0States is a highly-qualified consulting professional engineer with degrees in Civil Engineering\u00a0from the University of Connecticut and North Carolina State University.<\/p>\n
R.J. Valentine will round out the conversation with current advances in\u00a0track safety. His discussion will include the emerging technology of high-impact amelioration on race circuits. Valentine, an accomplished race-car\u00a0driver and track owner, is one of the nation’s leading advocates for\u00a0improved safety barriers.<\/p>\n
The conversation will be moderated by IMRRC Sports Car Club of\u00a0America Archival Technician, Rick Hughey. Hughey has a long association\u00a0with both American and European racing as a broadcaster, race worker\u00a0and driver. His experience includes time with the Tyrrell\u00a0Formula One\u00a0team\u00a0in the\u00a01970s.<\/p>\n
The Racing Research Center is an archival library dedicated to the\u00a0preservation and sharing of the history of motorsports, of all series and all\u00a0venues, through its collections of books, periodicals, films, photographs,\u00a0fine art and other materials.<\/p>\n
