The International Motor\u00a0Racing Research Center is again partnering with the Society of\u00a0Automotive Historians to present “The First Turn Meets the\u00a0Cultural Turn – History on the Eights,” an academic symposium\u00a0on racing history.<\/div>\n
The fourth annual Michael R. Argetsinger Symposium on\u00a0International Motor Racing History will take place Friday and\u00a0Saturday, Nov. 9 and 10. The public is welcome and\u00a0encouraged to attend any or all of the sessions with no charge.<\/div>\n
The two-day event will showcase discussions on Formula Vee,\u00a0Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing, British automotive designer and\u00a0engineer Reid Railton, several different presentations about\u00a0NASCAR, and more. The Friday morning and afternoon sessions will be held at the\u00a0Watkins Glen International Media Center adjacent to the race\u00a0track. An evening reception from 5-8 p.m. at the IMRRC Visitor’s\u00a0Center in downtown Watkins Glen will include a screening of\u00a0the movie “Cars” followed by Jon Summers presenting\u00a0“Differentiating Between Richard ‘The King’ Petty and Pixar’s\u00a0‘Mr. The King’: Historiography in NASCAR and Why It Matters.”<\/div>\n
The Saturday sessions will take place at the Watkins Glen\u00a0Elementary School auditorium adjacent to the IMRRC. Buz\u00a0McKim, recently retired historian at the NASCAR Hall of Fame\u00a0in Charlotte, N.C. and author of “The NASCAR Vault: An\u00a0Official History Featuring Rare Collectibles from Motorsports\u00a0Images and Archives,” will be the keynote speaker.<\/div>\n

Kate Sullivan, who raced “FrankenNova” to many regional and land speed records in Scotland in unmodified street classes including four-cylinder street car, diesel truck and four-cylinder pickup, will also be a presenter at the Symposium.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
World-renowned racing historian and author Karl Ludvigsen will\u00a0speak about automotive engineer and the subject of his new book,\u00a0“REID RAILTON: Man of Speed,” at the Symposium.<\/div>\n

Don Capps, chairman of the SAH International Motor Sports\u00a0History Section and IMRRC Historians Council member, said\u00a0that this year’s topics are particularly relevant.<\/div>\n
“Seventy years ago racing culture exploded,” Capps said.\u00a0“1948 was definitely a keystone year. From the founding of\u00a0NASCAR to the origin of racing in the streets of Watkins Glen\u00a0and the birth of many legendary venues and marques in\u00a0Europe, the post-war world was ready to embrace motorsports.\u00a0The theme for this year’s symposium celebrates that.”<\/div>\n
The symposium debuted in 2015 and originally was named in\u00a0honor of the late Jean S. Argetsinger, who collaborated with her\u00a0husband, Cameron, when he revived road racing in America\u00a0after World War II and later brought the United States Grand\u00a0Prix for a successful 20-year run at Watkins Glen. Jean was a\u00a0founder of the IMRRC.<\/div>\n
At Jean’s request, the symposium was re-named in 2017 in\u00a0honor of her son, Michael R. Argetsinger, an award-winning\u00a0motorsports author and a longtime member of the IMRRC’s\u00a0Governing Council who died in 2015.<\/div>\n
Among the supporters of the annual symposium is the Watkins\u00a0Glen Area Chamber of Commerce, which provides financial\u00a0assistance.<\/div>\n
The International Motor Racing Research Center collects,\u00a0shares and preserves the history of\u00a0motorsports. Spanning\u00a0continents, eras and race series, the Center’s collection\u00a0embodies the speed, drama and camaraderie of amateur and\u00a0professional motor racing throughout the world. The Center\u00a0welcomes serious researchers and the casual fans alike to\u00a0share stories of race drivers, race series, and race cars\u00a0captured on our shelves and walls, and brought to life through a\u00a0regular calendar of public lectures and special events.<\/div>\n
The International Society of Automotive Historians encourages\u00a0research into any aspect of automotive history. The SAH\u00a0actively supports the compilation and preservation of papers,\u00a0organizational records, print ephemera and images to\u00a0safeguard, broaden and deepen the understanding of\u00a0motorized, wheeled land transportation through the modern age\u00a0and into the future.
