{"id":497997,"date":"2019-01-08T11:49:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T19:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=70274"},"modified":"2023-12-07T14:14:37","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T14:14:37","slug":"amelia-to-honor-revolutionary-indy-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/amelia-to-honor-revolutionary-indy-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Amelia Island Concours (2019) &#8211; To Honor Revolutionary Indy Cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the 110th anniversary of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the 24th annual Amelia Island Concours d\u2019Elegance will celebrate the brilliant and radical ideas and the ground breaking cars that helped revolutionize America\u2019s great race.<\/p>\n<p>From its earliest days the \u201c500\u201d was the cradle of innovation and the nursery of famous, sometimes obscure and occasionally infamous cars that drove the Indy 500 to become not just \u201cthe greatest spectacle in racing\u201d but the most important auto race in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Speed has always been the ultimate goal and the defining virtue of the cars that raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Indy\u2019s ceaseless technological innovations dated to the days before World War I when a Grand Prix Peugeot showed the sport the way forward with its seminal high-revving dohc four-valve engine. Photo courtesy of the Bruce Linsmeyer Collection<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The brilliant DOHC four valve Peugeot begat the exquisite Millers and the mighty Offenhauser that reigned at Indy from 1935 finally surrendering its crown after its 28th \u201c500\u201d victory in 1976. Across three decades &#8212; 1931 through 1952 &#8212; Diesel power, as epitomized by the 1934 Cummins 2-stroke Diesel defied and defeated not only Indy convention but draconian fuel consumption rules in 1934. Cummins Diesel power went on to claim Indy\u2019s coveted pole position in 1952.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_684672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-684672\" style=\"width: 1235px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-684672 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1235\" height=\"732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1.jpeg 1235w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1-300x178.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1-1024x607.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1-100x59.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1-770x456.jpeg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Mosport-Car-38-2003-e1546975187837-1-293x174.jpeg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1235px) 100vw, 1235px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-684672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1926 Miller FWD 91-cu.in.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By then the \u201c500\u201d had changed speed, shape and style through the Miller front-wheel drive era of the 1920s through 1949, the birth of the Roadster in 1952, the rear-engine invasion of the 1960s with the introduction of Formula 1 technology and the arrival of Formula 1 World Champions Cooper and Lotus.\u00a0Ground effects arrived at Indy from Formula 1 in 1979 and, as in 1961, everything changed with speeds climbing steeply.<\/p>\n<p>Some innovations came too far too fast turning Indy\u2019s engineering and design orthodoxy inside out.\u00a0Turbine engines twice came close to Indy\u2019s victory lane, none with more engineering flair than the Lotus four-wheel-drive Type 56 that, in 1968, retired from the lead less than 23 miles from the richest payday in motorsport. A year after Jim Hall\u2019s Chaparral 2K became the first Indy 500 ground effects winner Dan Gurney\u2019s radical stock-block Chevy V-8 Eagle BLAT &#8212; Boundary Layer Adhesion Technology &#8212; blew established ground effects doctrine apart, started from the front row of the \u201c500\u201d with a stock-block Chevy V-8 engine and a week later won the Milwaukee 150-miler from that last row. Photo courtesy of Daimler\/Mercedes-Benz.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indy\u2019s radical game changers got their ultimate revenge a quarter century ago when a new rulebook was written to lure major car manufacturers to the \u201c500\u201d with generous specifications for turbocharged stock block pushrod engines. Penske Racing\u2019s brain trust read those rules with extraordinary care and the Penske-Mercedes PC 23 powered by the mega-horsepower Mercedes-Benz 500I V-8 was the result. It was such a leap that the 1,000-plus horsepower Mercedes 500I \u201cpushrod\u201d turbo V-8 became known as \u201cThe Beast\u201d. It dominated the entire \u201cMonth of May\u201d, upset Indy\u2019s status quo and was, as the turbines and Dan Gurney\u2019s BLAT Eagle before it, banned.<\/p>\n<p>To those who live for Indy\u2019s Month of May the \u201c500\u201d is the one race worth any cost.\u00a0As race car technology advances the sanctioning bodies in some forms of motorsport have struggled to reduce speeds and expense in the name of fairness, economy and competition.
