{"id":498139,"date":"2019-04-15T11:22:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T18:22:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=77105"},"modified":"2024-10-02T03:38:34","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T03:38:34","slug":"1959-mga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/1959-mga\/","title":{"rendered":"1959 MGA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ubiquitous MGA.\u00a0 In 1955, it marked a radical change from the aging lines of the MG TF, a style that had been carried on with minor changes since before WWII.<\/p>\n<p>Where did this quantum leap spring from?<\/p>\n<p>George Phillips was a photographer for <em>Autosport\u00a0<\/em>magazine, who not only photographed cars he raced them.<\/p>\n<p>In 1948, Phillips raced his MG TC special at Goodwood and won his class. Then, at the first post-war running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with co-driver R.M. Syd Enever an MG designer was tasked with creating the new more aerodynamic body. What he produced was the precursor to the MGA.<\/p>\n<p>But his creation had its problems. Phillips\u2019 new racer had a modern envelope body, but underneath was the aging TD powertrain and chassis. One lingering problem was that due to the TD\u2019s ladder-style frame, the driver sat very high in the car. The new car, making its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show was to be called the MGA. Period advertising calling it \u201cThe first of a new line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The body on frame design contained an inline, four-cylinder engine from the MG Magnette that was attached to a four-speed gearbox. No roll up windows, no radio. Just two seats, a banjo-style steering wheel, four Jaeger gauges and four forward gears\u2026pure heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Turn the key, pull the starter and it\u2019s alive! There is the axiom, \u201cthere is no replacement for displacement,\u201d but four cylinders is all you need to have fun in a MGA. It makes all the right sounds, there\u2019s the gear whine, the rorty exhaust note, the squeaks and rattles of an old English car, it\u2019s just what the doctor ordered. So what if it\u2019s cold, plenty of heat comes in from the engine compartment and it\u2019s a sports car where you need to be made of sterner stuff. It just puts a smile on everyone\u2019s face especially the driver of the A.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The MGA is not fast, big deal it\u2019s great fun on a twisty country road, it doesn\u2019t need to visit a highway. It\u2019s not expensive, fantastic! It\u2019s a great way to get into the world of vintage sports cars.
