Marco Diez unveiled his reimagined 1963 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe at\u00a0The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering<\/em>\u00a0during Monterey Car Week. Inspired by the legendary 1963 Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe \u201c49FXN,\u201d this Low Drag, known as project \u201cOWL226\u201d because of its California registration, was designed by Diez who painstakingly recreated the original body and drivetrain while refining the car\u2019s fit, finish and interior.<\/p>\n

Built in collaboration with Fast Cars Ltd. and UK coachbuilders RS Panels, the car was created through an exacting eight-year process that strove to replicate the construction and appearance of the original \u201c49FXN\u201d as it would have looked when first designed. The build process was so meticulous that many of the screws were machined specifically for the project, while the interior was built far above and beyond the elegant standards of a Jaguar road car of the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnveiling this car at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering <\/em>was the culmination of nearly a decade\u2019s work,\u201dsaid Marco Diez, owner and designer of \u201cOWL226.\u201d \u201cThis Jaguar E-Type Low Drag Coupe has been a passion project. I believe \u201849FXN\u2019 is the one of most beautiful automobiles ever made, so to take inspiration from that and make it my own is a dream come true.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Low Drag Coupe \u201cOWL226\u201d also features much of the same running gear as the original including a 3.8-litre straight-six competition engine – this one a modern example by Crosthwaite and Gardiner that produces 380 horsepower. The car also features a unique ram-air intake to feed air to the side draft Weber carburetors just like \u201c49FXN.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the original was a stripped-down race car, Diez sought to make this car equally as beautiful and tasteful on the inside as it is on the outside. The interior is almost entirely custom-made due to the unique dimensions of the Low Drag when compared to other E-Types. From bespoke gauges, custom seats and a custom roll-bar with integrated headrests to the custom-machined steering wheel and one-off A\/C system, the car is a wealth of fine details.<\/p>\n

Annis is the Founder and Editor of Vintage Racecar\/Vintage Roadcar magazine, the Petersen Museum\u2019s Finish Line and Petersen Quarterly, Alfa Owner, and The Oily Rag magazines. He founded Parabolica Publishing in 1997 after a career in biology, anatomy and neurobiology. Along with this passion for automobiles Casey is a long distance open-ocean paddleboard racer who\u2019s competed in the 32-mile Catalina to Manhattan Beach race and the 32-mile Molokai to Oahu race.
