The 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C, owned by Jon and Mary Shirley of Medina, Washington, was named \u201cBest of Show\u201d at the 58th Pebble Beach Concours d\u2019Elegance, held Sunday, August 18.<\/p>\n
Shirley, Vintage Racecar reader and the former president and chief operating officer of Microsoft who resides in Medina, Washington, purchased this 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta four years ago. One of only 33 examples built for road use, and one of only six privately commissioned Berlinettas, this car also enjoys the unique distinction of having won the inaugural Watkins Glen road race, in 1948, in the hands of Stephen Griswold. Recently, Shirley commissioned the skilled craftsmen at Butch Dennison\u2019s Dennison International to restore the car to concours standards, culminating in the car\u2019s fantastic Best of Show result.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis car has an intriguing history,\u201d says Shirley. \u201cIt won the first race at Watkins Glen in 1948, and though the car\u2019s been driven quite a bit, it\u2019s never been wrecked.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always been an Alfa fan, so winning at Pebble Beach just doesn\u2019t get much better. I can\u2019t wait to take it back on the road real soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
