{"id":498755,"date":"2020-05-26T13:08:47","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T20:08:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=107145"},"modified":"2024-02-21T03:23:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T03:23:47","slug":"new-zealand-is-classic-car-godzone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/new-zealand-is-classic-car-godzone\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand is Classic Car Godzone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are an old car buff, love beautiful scenery and friendly people, and want to visit a place where they speak English and you can drink the water, then New Zealand is the place for you.\u00a0 These are classics from various events in the land down under, the land down under.<\/p>\n<p>A friend and I stuffed ourselves into my Lilliputian 1966 Morris Minor convertible and headed south to take part in the annual Beach Hop cruise and show held in March. When we arrived, we slipped into the procession through town and were sandwiched between a 1964 Pontiac GTO and a 1968 Olds 442 with their headers uncorked. It\u2019s cheap to run and doggedly dependable.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were only a handful of British cars at this particular event, but there are plenty of them here. Most of the participants drove American classics from the 1930s up into the 1960s. That is the name a 19<sup>th<\/sup> century poet gave this little island nation about the size of California, and for classic car buffs that moniker is apt. Nashes sold well in New Zealand and Australia during the depression.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Sure, there are a lot of old American cars in Cuba, but they are mostly tawdry dowagers and smoking derelicts. And as often as not, they have Soviet era truck engines shoehorned into them. It is gorgeous.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But New Zealanders have all the choices in the world, and they still love classic American cars. They can afford them, and they cherish them. Actually, they have restored cars in Godzone that few Americans would take on. Kiwis (that\u2019s what they call themselves) are very big on Ferraris too. All of them have been brought in at considerable expense by Kiwi car buffs. I have shipped a couple of Mustangs here for friends myself. They were dependable, but they impressed nobody. They have several superb road-racing tracks, such as Hampton Downs, and Pukekohe near Auckland, and midget and dirt track ovals such as Western Springs Speedway in the same area. Also, there are street races around the country for cars and motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>In fact, one of the premier motorcycle events anywhere is held in the streets of a town called Paeroa on the North Island, each year. It is a championship-class venue, and riders as well as spectators come from all over the world to participate.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Race 2 Paeroa 2018\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zvCurYZWKcU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Race 2 Paeroa 2018\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zvCurYZWKcU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Consider this: little New Zealand\u2014 a country of about five million people\u2014 has produced no less than three Formula One greats, namely Chris Amon, Howden Ganley, Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren. And if that\u2019s not enough, there is five-time Indy car world champion Scott Dixon. In fact, you see classic British cars here that you would seldom see in the States.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Brits at the Beach 2017\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2jTSsfXDbdc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Brits at the Beach 2017\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2jTSsfXDbdc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage-->Also, during the American winter when the racing season is over in the U.S., Kiwi Scott Dixon sometimes shows up at a hill climb event in a town called Hahai a couple of hours out of Auckland and participates in a spectacle called the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/french-lessons-leadfoot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Leadfoot Festival<\/a>, which consists of a twisting one-mile paved road over hills, and through the woods to none other than rally champion Rod Millen\u2019s house. American cars that are rarely seen at events at home show up in numbers here. Places to stay range from breathtaking penthouse accommodations in Auckland to hotels and motor lodges, and Airing anywhere in the country. Fenders are called guards, as in mudguards, the hood is called the bonnet and a convertible top is a hood. The trunk is the boot, and wrist pins are called gudgeon pins and Cotter keys are split pins. Also, a flashlight is a torch, and if someone says I will knock you up in the morning, relax.
