From October 22nd to October 25th, some 356 historical\u00a0automobiles\u00a0came together for the 1000 Miglia\u00a02020.\u00a0The 1000 Mille\u00a0Miglia, which is now in its 38th<\/sup>\u00a0year, had vehicles traverse 1,000 miles (1,600km) of the most stunning regions of Italy in its legendary endurance road race.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Starting from 1927 and until 1957, the perfect mixture of the race\u2019s history and scenery made the Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a0one of the most prominent road races of its time. The modern\u00a0version of the event remains a highlight of the vintage car racing season. Since 1977, the Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a0has been held as\u00a0a rally for historic automobiles.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

History of the Millie Miglia Race<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After the Italian Grand Prix was moved from Brescia to Monza, Counts Franco\u00a0Mazzotti<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Aymo\u00a0Maggi, along with motoring journalist Giovanni\u00a0Canestrini\u00a0and sports manager Renzo\u00a0Castagneto\u00a0decided to start their own race.\u00a0With the support of a group of wealthy associates, it was settled that the race would run from Brescia to Rome and would return to the starting point in a course that was shaped like a figure eight. The initial race was a thousand Roman miles, or roughly 1,500km. The\u00a0next races had twelve other routes with different total lengths.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a0was held on March 26, 1927 and overall\u00a0seventy-seven racers were involved,\u00a0all Italian\u00a0starters. It covered around 1,005 modern miles, or 1,618km.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

At the time, only unmodified production cars\u00a0were allowed to\u00a0enter, and the entrance fee was just one lira. Out of the seventy-seven, fifty-one were able to reach the finishing post at\u00a0Brescia. The first-ever winner was Giuseppe\u00a0Morandi<\/a>, who averaged around 79km\/h, or 48mph, finishing the course in under 21 hours and 5 minutes in his 2-liter OM. All top three places were swept by\u00a0Brescia\u00a0based OM.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

These days, from the original seventy-seven starters, hundreds of vintage racing cars are entered\u00a0in the race.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

First Stage of 1000 Miglia 2020: Brescia \u2013\u00a0Cervia-Milano Marittima\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

All 356 vintage cars\u00a0departed from Brescia and drove through Lake Garda,\u00a0Desenzano,\u00a0Sirmione,\u00a0Villafrancia\u00a0di Verona, Mantua and\u00a0had a short pit stop in Ferrara<\/a> for their race dinner.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The finish line for the day was\u00a0Cervia-Milano Marittima wherein the same crews departed the next day, Friday, October 23 to head for Rome.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Leading the pack\u00a0with 7326 points was the Lancia Lambda<\/a> Spider\u00a0Casaro\u00a0of 1929 driven by\u00a0Sergio\u00a0Sisti\u00a0and Anna\u00a0Gualandi. Just 54 points behind in the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato<\/a>\u00a0of 1929 are Andrea and Roberto\u00a0Vesco.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Coming in third were\u00a0Gianmario\u00a0Fontanella\u00a0and Anna Maria\u00a0Covelli\u00a0in the Lancia Lambda Spider\u00a0Casaro\u00a0VII Series of 1927 with 7087 points. At fourth and fifth was the 1927 Bugatti T37A with Matteo and Martina\u00a0Belotti\u00a0with 6741 points and the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato\u00a0of 1929 with Alberto\u00a0Aliverti\u00a0and Stefano Valente, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Luca Patron and Elena\u00a0Scaramuzzi\u2019s\u00a049 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Young of 1929 came seventh,\u00a0while Lorenzo and Mario\u00a0Turelli\u00a0in OM 665 SMM Superba of 1929 came in eighth.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first all-female crew, Silvia\u00a0Marini\u00a0and Francesca Ruggeri, came in thirty third with the Bugatti T40 of 1929.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Second Stage of 1000 Miglia 2020:\u00a0Cervia-Milano Maritima \u2013 Rome\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

On the second day of the 1000 Miglia 2020, the first cars left the fog-riddled\u00a0Cervia-Milano Maritima at 6:10 am,\u00a0though it did clear out after a few kilometers. The cars crossed Cesenatico, and\u00a0Gambettola. By the time\u00a0they reached San Marino, the first rays of the sun had come out. Clear skies greeted them as they entered Urbina.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The cars then went through Parco\u00a0delle\u00a0Cesane, Gola del\u00a0Furlo, Pergola and\u00a0Acervia. The crews had their lunch at\u00a0Fabriano. The 356 cars then went through Macerata, Fermo,\u00a0Montotto,\u00a0Offida, Ascoli Piceno, Amatrice, through Strada\u00a0della\u00a0Romanella, Rieti, and finally arriving in Rome.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The second stage of 1000 Miglia\u00a02020 featured the debut of Tomaso Trussardi with the expert driver\u00a0GianMaria\u00a0Aghem\u00a0as a guest car number 105.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n

\u201cThe Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a0has always been an important business card for Italy and all the countries we pass through. We want to show that – taking all the necessary precautions – it is possible to move forward and look to the future. To lessen the contact in the race, the cars were not required to stop at stamp control stations but were verified in transit instead.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

During the second stage, in first were Andrea and Roberto\u00a0Vesco\u00a0in their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato. The two dominated the classification of the first stage with 13779 points.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Lancia Lambda\u00a0Casaro\u00a0VII Series with\u00a0Gianmario\u00a0Fontanella\u00a0and Anna Maria\u00a0Covelli\u00a0came in second following by 39 points. Coming in third and fourth are the Lancia Lambda Spider\u00a0Casaro\u00a0of 1929 with Sergio\u00a0Sisti\u00a0and Anna\u00a0Gualandi\u00a0and the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato\u00a0of 1929, with 13691 points and 12598\u00a0points\u00a0respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The first cars of the 100 Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a0reached Amatrice at around 6pm and the drivers paid their respects to the town that was\u00a0greatly affected by the 2016 earthquake<\/a>.\u00a0After 10 hours behind the wheel, crossing over 1000 towns, the idea of the cars passing in homage was proposed as a showcase for the city in Lazio.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Passing through Rieti, the drivers finally reached the last part of the second stage and onto the City of Rome.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Much like the first day, the second day was all about safety as more than 5,000 masks were distributed to the event participants. There were more than 10,400 daily temperature tests done throughout.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The arrival of the contestants in Rome\u00a0was very different compared to the previous races as even though it was still springtime weather, the sun had already set for a few hours. The excited and tired smiles of the drivers and spectators were hidden behind masks. The welcoming crowd was not as dense as the previous years, but it was still heartwarming for all the race participants. The drivers and crews arrived a little past 9 pm.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The passing of the baton also happened in the second stage in the car 1000 with Cristina\u00a0Parodi\u00a0passing it on to Chiara\u00a0Giallonardo<\/a>, the TV face of Linea Verde and a journalist.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The final ranking at the end of the second stage saw Andrea and Roberto\u00a0Vesco\u00a0reclaiming their position in their Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato\u00a0car of 1929 with 43837 points.\u00a0Gianmario\u00a0Fontanella\u00a0and Anna Maria\u00a0Covelli\u00a0in the Lancia Lambda\u00a0Casaro\u00a0VII Series of 1927 was not far behind with 42913 points. Coming in third was the\u00a0Lanca\u00a0Lambda Spider\u00a0Casaro\u00a0car of 1929 with 42672 points driven by\u00a0Segio\u00a0Sisti\u00a0and Anna\u00a0Gualandi.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Third Stage of 1000 Miglia 2020: Rome \u2013 Parma\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It was 6:30 am in Rome when competitors set off for the third stage of the 1000 Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a02020. For the third stage, the vehicles traveled\u00a0over 550kms to Parma<\/a>. They would be going through Val\u00a0D\u2019Orcia, Sienna, and La\u00a0Cisa and as if the stages were not enough, the race participants drove through dark skies and rain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

\u201cToday it starts the longest stage of the route, passing once again through many beautiful cities in our country. Rain greeted the crews as they went around Lake\u00a0Vico\u00a0and crossed the Val\u00a0d\u2019Orcia.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

It was still raining when they arrived in\u00a0Radicofani, passing through the highest peak of Val\u00a0D\u2019Orcia\u00a0the famous Rocca, which was also the ancient control point of the border between the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The race passed through Siena for lunch. UNESCO described the Piazza del Campo as \u201ca perfect and ideal example of a medieval city.\u201d The captivating city was filled with legends like the devil pushing Santa Caterina da Siena that she fell on the first steps of the Stairs of Piazza San Giovanni, it connects the Baptistery of Siena and its square to the Piazza del Duomo.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Unfortunately,\u00a0the drivers did not have enough time to enjoy the sceneries as they only took a quick meal and then were off again\u00a0to Lucca.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Provisional ranking saw Andrea and Roberto\u00a0Vesco\u00a0with 54171 points on board their Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS\u00a0Zagato\u00a0of 1929. Sergio\u00a0Sisti\u00a0and Anna\u00a0Gualandi\u00a0on the Lancia Lambda Spider\u00a0Casaro\u00a0of 1929 were not far behind with 53053 points. Coming in third was\u00a0Gianmario\u00a0Fontanella\u00a0and Anna Maria\u00a0Covelli\u00a0in the Lancia Lambda\u00a0Casaro\u00a0VII Series of 1927\u00a0with 52187 points.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Fourth Stage: Parma \u2013 Brescia\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Clear skies greeted the drivers, a welcome sight after the rain that buffered them the day before. At the Parco Ducale di Parma, the start of the last stage of the 1000 Mille\u00a0Miglia\u00a02020 was\u00a0signaled by the car 1000 and the hyper SUV\u00a0elettrico\u00a0Vision 2030 by Fabrizio Giugiaro displaying the 1000\u00a0Miglia\u00a0Green.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The 300 teams that were left in Parma headed towards the\u00a0Varano\u00a0de\u2019 Melegari\u00a0circuit for a series of special stages. They were then expected to pass by\u00a0Salsomaggiore\u00a0Terme,\u00a0Castell\u2019Arquato, Codogno, and Lodi. They had lunch at\u00a0Treviglio before\u00a0they traveled off to Bergamo towards\u00a0Viale\u00a0Venezia, and finally to Brescia.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

After leading for almost the duration of the race,\u00a0Andrea and Roberto Vesco\u00a0were victorious in their 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS Zagato. Coming in second was the 1929 Lancia Lambda Spider Casaro driven by\u00a0Sergio Sisti and Anna Gualandi. Third place was secured by the 1927 Lancia Lambda Casaro VII Serie driven by\u00a0Gianmario Fontanella and Anna Maria Covelli.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
