{"id":499032,"date":"2020-11-05T00:55:57","date_gmt":"2020-11-05T05:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/?p=298772"},"modified":"2024-12-06T03:50:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-06T03:50:21","slug":"bonhams-golden-age-of-motoring-auction-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/bonhams-golden-age-of-motoring-auction-results\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonhams Golden Age of Motoring Auction Results"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>A unique 1932 Fowler 10hp \u2018B6\u2019 Showman\u2019s Road Locomotive, &#8216;The Lion&#8217;,\u00a0manufactured at the end of the steam era, took the prize for the highest sale price,\u00a0selling for \u00a3911,000\u00a0at\u00a0Bonhams &#8216;The Golden Age of Motoring&#8217; Sale in London on\u00a030 October.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>After a transatlantic bidding contest between bidders in the UK and USA, \u2018The Lion\u2019 was ultimately sold when the hammer of the auctioneer fell in favor of one of the most extensive steam collectors in the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The new custodian, Mr John Saunders, reported the Fowler locomotive was a belated &#8220;birthday present\u201d to himself and would be displaying the steam engine in the new year at steam fairs, if COVID-19 restrictions would allow.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Two other unique sales the commanded strong prices included a 1929 Bugatti Type 40 Grand Sports Tourer,\u00a0and a 1901 Panhard Et Levassor Type A2 7HP Twin-Cylinder Rear Entrance Tonneau.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2018The Lion\u2019\u00a01932\u00a0Fowler\u00a010HP B6\u00a0Showman\u2019s Road Locomotive\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Estimate: \u00a3800,000- \u00a31,200,000. Sale Price: \u00a3911,000<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0story of \u2018The Lion\u2019 started back in the early 1920s when Mr. Harold Livesey left Fowler\u2019s works manager due to a disagreement and then became a general manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Burrell_%26_Sons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charles Burrell &amp; Sons of Thetford<\/a>.\u00a0It was there that he met and made friends with\u00a0the sales manager,\u00a0Sydney Harrison. He worked closely with Fowler\u2019s designer Alf Pepper and Harold Livesey to create four \u2018Super Lions.\u2019<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The first of the four Class B6 10hp \u2018Super Lion\u2019\u00a0showman\u2019s road locomotives to be completed was \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/1932-fowler-b6-super-lion\/\">The Lion<\/a>.\u2019 It was designed with twisted brass pillars and knobs for the awning. It is said that\u00a0her last appearance was at the\u00a0Wimborne\u00a0St Giles Fair in 1964. She was then parked under a large open-sided barn at Bert Dibben\u2019s farm in Martin, Hampshire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The engine was sold to Arthur Thomson in 1995, after Lucas\u2019 death the year before. After Arthur Thomson\u2019s demise in 2018, the engine was given to his brother Frank.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u2018The Lion\u2019\u00a0is considered to be\u00a0one of the finest genuine showman\u2019s road locomotives in preservation.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 20px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1901 Panhard Et Levassor Type A2 7HP Twin-Cylinder Rear Entrance Tonneau\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Estimate: \u00a3225,000- \u00a3275,000. Sale Price: \u00a3322,00<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbusa.com\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mercedes Benz<\/a> might have brought about the dawn of the automobile, but in a lot of ways, the\u00a0Syst\u00e9me\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/london-to-brighton-veteran-car-run-2018-report-photos\/\">Panhard<\/a> was the pioneer in many ways how cars are operated.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/T0KgRqdj7hg<\/div>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Panhard moved the engine to the front under a \u2018bonnet.\u2019 They changed the transfer of speed to mechanical, cog on cog, instead of by a belt, and they were also the first to encase their geared transmission in a \u2018box.\u2019<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The piano-style pedals were also introduced by Panhard to operate the clutch and transmission breaks. Initially,\u00a0they\u00a0used\u00a0a tiller\u00a0to operate the directional control of the car,\u00a0but they replaced it with a \u2018steering\u2019 wheel.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Only one main aspect of the example shows its\u00a0age\u00a0and it is the transfer of power to the road by chains from the transfer \u2018box.\u2019<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Type A2 Panhard-Levassors\u00a0can be called a transitional model as they still have the Daimler-Ph\u00e9nix\u00a0powerplant which the brand was built on, but it is in a body with a lower frame and proportions that were more user friendly.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Along with their obvious importance to the history of the automobile, what sets this example apart is that the original ledgers of Panhard-Levassor cars that show their order and supply information that can prove their age have survived, a feat that is a challenge for other models and marques.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-594454\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/image-6-1-750x563-1-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Extensive research has been done on this example by its current owner.\u00a0According to Panhard-Levassor ledger records, it shows that the motor car was built with a 7hp engine with chassis number 3114 on October 25, 1901.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Currently, the car has a La Carrosserie\u00a0Industrielle\u00a0coachbuilder plaque that it has worn starting 1960s at least.\u00a0The firm was Paris-based and was probably the builder of its body for Panhard.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Over the last 7 years, thorough research was done on the Panhard to make sure that a restoration would be very accurate, and it was then entrusted to\u00a0known experts.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A majority of the work fell on the shoulders of Tattersalls Veteran to Classic. They refurbished the mechanical parts as necessary, which included an engine rebuild with new bearings, a repair on one of the mountings, new drive cogs, and putting in a modern starter motor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It is notable that it was during the restoration that they noticed that the pistons have domed heads, a hint to an attempt to improve its performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Woodwork expert David Thompson worked on the rear bodywork, and with the use of a surviving factory 1901 car, he assured the\u00a0rear was rebuilt to its original rear entrance tonneau design. They replaced the bowed wood members of the frame, and an additional transverse leaf spring was also removed to return the body to its original form.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Esteemed trimmer Julian Taylor from\u00a0Protectus\u00a0did the upholstery work where he put a two-piece front\/rear tonneau cover in double duck. Daniel Garner from Garner\u2019s Wheelwrights brush-painted the whole car in period style Brewster Green.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The work was finalized over the last 12 months which included a test run on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/london-to-brighton-veteran-car-run-2019-photos\/\">London to Brighton in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 30px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align: center;\">1929 Bugatti Type 40 Grand Sport Tourer\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Estimate: \u00a3270,000- \u00a3330,000. Sale Price: \u00a3310,500<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>By the 1930s, Ettore Bugatti has cemented his reputation for constructing automobiles that gave outstanding performance both on the track and on the road. The world\u2019s racing drivers enjoyed their successes using the Bugatti machines, and more often than not, even using them\u00a0for their everyday driving. However, Bugatti\u2019s origins were vastly different from the glamour and prestige of the Grands Prix.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/xsW4phi2Nd0<\/div>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Ettore Bugatti was an Italian-born engineer that worked with De Dietrich, Mathis, and Deutz before he set up his own factory in\u00a0Molsheim, Alsace in 1910, then a part of Germany.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He designed the Type 10 while he was with Deutz, the number reflecting the nine previous designs. This was the prototype of the first\u00a0Molsheim-built Bugatti, the Type 13.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It was initially introduced in 1910 as the first Bugatti production car and was powered by a four-cylinder, single-overhead camshaft, 8-valve engine\u00a0of 1,327cc, four-speed gearbox, mounted on a short-wheelbase chassis that had a simple two-seater body. It is in good condition, runs well, and the engine was regularly started.
