{"id":499159,"date":"2021-02-01T14:43:17","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T22:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=115402"},"modified":"2024-02-11T18:07:03","modified_gmt":"2024-02-11T18:07:03","slug":"leyburn-sprints-to-celebrate-25th-anniversary-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/leyburn-sprints-to-celebrate-25th-anniversary-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Leyburn Sprints (2021) &#8211; Celebrate 25th Anniversary in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One\u00a0of Australia\u2019s most popular grass-roots motorsport events, the Historic Leyburn Sprints, is ramping up for its 25<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>anniversary this August after a Covid-enforced layoff in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The round-the-houses Sprints on Queensland\u2019s southern Darling Downs will be staged on \u00a0August 21-22, celebrating the 25<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0running since its founding in 1996 and 72 years since the little bush town hosted the 1949 Australian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n<p>A Legends Dinner featuring many Australian motorsport stars of the \u201960s, \u201970s and \u201980s will be the highlight of a packed weekend expected to attract around 15,000 spectators and more than 200 historic and classic racing cars.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"2017 Historic Leyburn Sprints Highlights\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PcrshcvMKH8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"2017 Historic Leyburn Sprints Highlights\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PcrshcvMKH8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Historic Leyburn Sprints President Tricia Chant said extra venue facilities were being planned to accommodate a surge in attendance after Covid-19 denied fans the opportunity to visit this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSouthern Downs Regional Council has provided a $5000 Community Grant, which we\u2019ll use to build new bench seating around the precinct and bar facilities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also developing an elevated VIP viewing platform and will be opening a new VIP camping area beside the Sprint-course starting line.\u00a0Because of Leyburn\u2019s location (60 kms north-west of Warwick) and lack of much fixed accommodation, thousands of visitors choose to camp and the new VIP area will be a valuable addition to our capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Campsite bookings are expected to open around March.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Chant said the Sprints had received a further annual grant of $25,000 through the Queensland Government\u2019s Queensland Destination Events Program to help promote one of the region\u2019s most important tourism drawcards, which was the Queensland Motorsport Event of the Year in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The Sprints are run by a community committee and annual proceeds are donated to local organizations and projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe effects of a long drought and then Covid-19 restrictions have put a heavy strain on our little rural community and the Sprints are so important to us.
