1970 Le Mans Race Artwork<\/h2>\n

I have always liked creating paintings of historic motorsports scenes, either to present a different angle or to try to capture the dramatic value of the subject matter. I never liked to simply paint \u201ca photo\u201d in my work because I\u2019ve always thought that if you have the\u00a0<\/span>photo there\u2019s really no need for an identical painting.\u00a0The 1970 Le Mans 24 Hours was exceptional in many ways and my painting\u00a0has\u00a0departed from the creation of a purely historic and accurate\u00a0image\u00a0to depicting\u00a0an imaginary scene showing\u00a0the main protagonists of the event all together.<\/p>\n

The setting is the iconic Tertre Rouge turn, the beginning of the Hunaudieres Straight (as the French call this section) that ends at the Mulsanne corner. To say that the weather did not cooperate that weekend of June would be an understatement. It rained\u00a0almost constantly during the race\u00a0and accidents (some very serious) occurred. By morning, half the field had retired and,\u00a0of the 57 starters\u00a0only\u00a016 were running at the end (12 of them Porsches) and\u00a0just\u00a07 were classified as finishers,\u00a0teams\u00a0which, according to the rules,\u00a0had\u00a0covered the minimum distance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
