until the 1970s, when there was a resurgence of interest in micro cars, especially in France.\u00a0 The resurgence was likely caused by the gas crisis in the middle \u201870s, but it continued for quite a while, again, especially in France.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-685547\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-293x195.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_7647-1-1400x933.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The French government allowed anyone over the age of 14 to drive moped-engined vehicles without a driver\u2019s license, safety inspection, or registration plate.\u00a0 The vehicles were restricted to 50-cc engines and a maximum speed of 45 kmph (27 mph), and they had to have at least one pedal that could be used to move the vehicle if the engine wasn\u2019t working.\u00a0 Without that pedal, it was no longer a moped, and the driver\/rider had to have a driving license.\u00a0 By the mid-1980s, there were 30 manufacturers in France producing 50 models of small, economical cars, or <em>voiturettes<\/em>.\u00a0 One of those manufacturers was <em>Societ\u00e9 d\u2019Exploitation et d\u2019Application des Brevet<\/em> (SEAB), located in the Villejuif suburb of Paris.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-685545 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1-67x100.jpg 67w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1-770x1155.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8386-1-293x440.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a>SEAB was run by a WWII ace fighter pilot, Roland Paulze d\u2019Ivoy de La Poye.\u00a0 His company was focused on the use of plastics.\u00a0 The company produced a variety of products, but they also built the bodies for the Citro\u00e9n Mehari, so they were familiar with at least that aspect of auto manufacture.\u00a0 SEAB took the next step to become a voiturette manufacturer in 1978 when they first showed the SEAB Flipper 1.\u00a0 It was followed by a Flipper 2, also known as a <em>Donky<\/em>, and a Flipper 3 before they stopped production in 1984.\u00a0 The two later Flippers were fairly conventional, small, front-wheel drive micro cars.\u00a0 Flipper 1 had some conventional design elements, but it was anything but conventional in other ways.<\/p>\n<p>Conventional elements of the design of Flipper 1 included a 47-cc Sachs air-cooled, two-stroke engine producing 3 bhp and driving the front wheels through a two-speed automatic transmission.\u00a0 It was small, only 234 cm (about 92 inches) in length, narrow, and slow.\u00a0 What makes the car particularly interesting is how they produced the body and why the car needed no reverse gear.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"The Inside Lane - 1978 SEAB Flipper\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HouX7N_Prkc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"The Inside Lane - 1978 SEAB Flipper\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HouX7N_Prkc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Rather than mold the body shell in its entirety, SEAB built the plastic body in two halves and bonded it together.\u00a0 The car, as a result, had a chassis-less monocoque shell.\u00a0 The most fascinating design element, though, was the lack of a reverse gear.\u00a0 It needed no reverse because the entire engine and suspension could be turned 360\u00b0 with the steering wheel.\u00a0 If you wanted to reverse, you just turned the steering wheel so that the engine and suspension rotated 180\u00b0 and drove off backwards.\u00a0 If the car was too close to a wall to be able to turn away normally, just turn the steering wheel until the engine and suspension reached 90\u00b0 and drive off to the left or right.\u00a0 In order to make this work, all wiring and plumbing ran through a large sleeve at the top of the engine to keep binding at a minimum.\u00a0 The exhaust is very short and is simply attached to the engine.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to turn the wheels more than 360\u00b0 because of the chance of kinking the wires and lines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-685549\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-293x195.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8366-1-1400x933.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There seem to be two stories about how the car got its name.\u00a0 In his book, <em>Bubblecars and Microcars<\/em>, Malcolm Bobbitt says the car was constructed by Flipper Sarl in Villejuif, although that name seems a bit odd for a French firm or individual.\u00a0 The second story is more fun \u2013 that it was named after a famous television porpoise.\u00a0 In fact, it is the second story that is correct.\u00a0 It seems that SEAB was quite successful in developing packaging for products like shampoo.\u00a0 That allowed de La Poye to create the Antibes Marineland for large marine animals. The car was named \u201cFlipper\u201d because he loved porpoises, and the most famous porpoise was the TV star.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_685550\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-685550\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-685550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-770x513.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-360x240.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-1155x770.jpg 1155w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-370x247.jpg 370w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-293x195.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/IMG_8384-1-1400x933.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-685550\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wiring runs down a central tube and into the\u00a047-cc Sachs air-cooled, two-stroke engine so that it can be swiveled 360-degrees on its axis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This particular Flipper resides at the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lanemotormuseum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.lanemotormuseum.org<\/a>).\u00a0Occasionally, the museum invites members to an event where they can drive some of the more unusual cars in the collection.\u00a0 This particular evening, the cars available were the Flipper 1 and a Peel Trident.\u00a0 Driving the Flipper was a trip.\u00a0 Two and a half turns of the steering wheel would send the car off at 90\u00b0.\u00a0 Five turns and you went backwards.\u00a0 A piece of tape on the steering wheel allowed me to count the number of turns.\u00a0 I only tried it while relatively still, but when movement by the car at 90\u00b0 or 180\u00b0 is still surprising.\u00a0 Driving the car was smile-inducing even though it\u2019s not very comfortable, its straight line performance is lacking, and its handling is adequate only for its speed &#8211;
