{"id":499634,"date":"2022-01-24T14:28:38","date_gmt":"2022-01-24T22:28:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=126927"},"modified":"2024-12-08T03:51:12","modified_gmt":"2024-12-08T03:51:12","slug":"female-porsche-team-completes-2022-dakar-classic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/female-porsche-team-completes-2022-dakar-classic\/","title":{"rendered":"Female Porsche Team Completes 2022 Dakar Classic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>American Amy Lerner and her co-driver Sara Bossaert, of Barcelona, Spain crossed the finish line of the 2022 Dakar Rally in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after motoring 8,375 kilometers in the team\u2019s 1982 Porsche 911 SC. The duo completed the prologue and 12 competitive stages of the motorsports event that is considered the toughest rally raid in the world, placing 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0and 6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the \u201cClassic\u201d class stages and earning a number of 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0and 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0placements in the navigation and regularity challenges in this class that is open to vintage vehicles from before 2000. This new category in the celebrated rally began last year and attracted 24 entries; it\u2019s open to heritage vehicles that participated in the rally founded by Thierry Sabine in 1979 or have the capability to perform as desert racers. This year\u2019s 44<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0edition drew 142 pioneer models at the start; these \u2018star cars\u2019 comprised more than 25 percent of the 578 teams that participated in the overall legendary rally, held for the third time in Saudi Arabia. Other classes include motorcycle, quad, car, SSV, truck and prototype.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-613388 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1.jpeg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1-300x265.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1-100x88.jpeg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/C2F365E4-8A7B-45B4-AFBA-A61D03694B34-770x679-1-293x258.jpeg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was the second participation for Lerner and Bossaert\u2019s Team AL Rally and the team\u2019s rear-drive 911 that was prepared by\u00a0GRally\u00a0as a tribute to Jacky Ickx and Rene Metge, who won the rally overall in 1984 in a similar Porsche. The car was upgraded this year with toughened parts to withstand the rigors of the competition by the experienced DeMevius family team of GRally, from Wavre, Belgium, who also provided support on the rally. A top moment on the rally was a surprise visit to Lerner at the rally\u2019s bivouac by the world-renowned racer and Dakar-winner Ickx.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Dakar 2022\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VbgpUNxlJuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Dakar 2022\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VbgpUNxlJuc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was super excited about our performance this year, with our win out of the 133 vehicles on Stage 9 of the rally,\u201d enthused Lerner, who noted that she and Bossaert were one of the three all-women\u2019s teams on the rally that drew 33 women in total. \u201cWe finished the prologue in 88<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place and worked our way to 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at the halfway point of the rally, but lost valuable time after running out of fuel 3 kilometers from the finish on Stage 7 and becoming stuck on a dune on Stage 8,\u201d explained Lerner, who piloted the rear-drive Porsche with a manual transmission.\u00a0\u201cThe terrain was really difficult; I owe thanks to BFGoodrich for their support and amazing tires which enabled me, in a 2WD vehicle, to drive on through many sections that saw multiple 4WD teams getting stuck.\u201d\u00a0Team AL Rally finished 37<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0overall in Classics and 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the H1 category.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-809748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-1024x549.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-100x54.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-770x413.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-293x157.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/IMG_5616-1400x750.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 2022 Dakar staged in the south of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, beginning along the Red Sea before traveling north to Ha\u2019il and then westerly to capital city Riyadh; it then descended into the Empty Quarter, with a finish at the Formula 1 track in Jeddah.
