There will be two new vehicles to be inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register, as the Hagerty Drivers Foundation recently announced. This year, they have announced the 31st and 32nd cars to be inducted into the only program that is federally recognized to document the historical and cultural significance of the automobile.<\/p>\n

The National Historic Vehicle Register<\/strong> is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that aims to preserve America\u2019s automotive heritage for future generations. They work closely with the U.S. Dept. of the Interior\u2019s Historic American Engineering Record (HAER).<\/p>\n

Inducted vehicles are permanently added in the Library of Congress.<\/p>\n

For 2022, the inductees are:<\/p>\n

Hudson Hornet<\/p>\n

Hagerty Drivers Foundation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

1952 Hudson Hornet (7B-185596) \u201cFabulous Hudson Hornet,\u201d Raced by Herb Thomas<\/h2>\n

The Hudson Hornet<\/a> dominated stock car racing from 1951 to 1955, just as the sport started to become popular. Cars from small companies were driven by early NASCAR legends Her Thomas, Marshall Teague, and Dick Rathmann enabling those same cars to beat the ones produced by the Big Three automakers.<\/p>\n

Legendary mechanic Smokey Yunick prepared the Hudson Hornet and it was given to Thomas halfway through the 1952 season. Thomas set a mark for himself, as he became the most prominent Hudson driver achieving a total of 78 podium finishes driving the Hornets and setting the highest win percentage in NASCAR history.<\/p>\n

The \u201cFabulous Hudson Hornet\u201d is the only Hudson known to exist that has been campaigned in NASCAR. It is owned by Al Schultz and is currently showcased at the National Hudson Motor Car Company Museum in Ypsilanti, Michigan.<\/p>\n

Turbine<\/p>\n

Hagerty Drivers Foundation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Chrysler Corporation Turbine Car (Serial No. 9912-31)<\/h2>\n

Only 55 of these groundbreaking vehicles were produced by Chrysler as part of their decades long effort to create a mass-market gas-turbine powered automobile. The automobiles were equipped with turbine jet engines in Ghia bodies. As part of a consumer research project that was ran from 1963 to 1966, the cars were distributed to households across the country. From the 55 cars, only nine cars remain from the project. Stahls Automotive Collection is the owner of the Turbine Car and it is currently on display at their automotive museum in Chesterfield, Michigan.<\/p>\n

For those interested to see these cars up close there are two events that will be featuring these two legendary cars:<\/p>\n

Greenwich Concours d\u2019Elegance, June 3 to 5, Greenwich, Connecticut<\/h2>\n

The Greenwich Concours will be featuring the \u201cFabulous Hudson Hornet\u201d. Event attendees will have the chance to see this fantastic stock-car up close while also learning about its historical significance to NASCAR. They\u2019ll also learn how the car was the inspiration for the \u2018Doc Hudson\u2019 character from the popular mid-2000s \u201cCars\u201d movie franchise.<\/p>\n

Cars at the Capital, September 2 to 11<\/h2>\n

Set in the heart of Washington D.C. the annual \u2018Cars at the Capital\u201d exhibition is an annual celebration of car culture hosted by the Hagerty Drivers Foundation. Set on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the 1952 Hudson Hornet is scheduled to be displayed from September 2 to 6, while the Chrysler Turbine is scheduled to be displayed from September 7 to 11.<\/p>\n
