The event\u00a0remains one of the country\u2019s largest vintage race events and one of the few through\u00a0city streets.<\/p>\n<p>Begun in 1983, the\u00a0Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix\u00a0is entering its 40th\u00a0year and features two weekends of racing. The\u00a0first weekend is the Historics at Pittsburgh International Race Complex. The\u00a0second\u00a0weekend features vintage racing on a 2.33-mile road course through the\u00a0streets of Schenley Park in front of 100,000 fans and 3,000 show cars on the\u00a0Bob O\u2019Connor Golf Course.\u00a0Between the race weekends\u00a0there\u00a0are numerous\u00a0car shows, parties, rallies, and parades.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0PVGP is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization with a charity mission. The Historics at Pittsburgh International Race Complex will\u00a0showcase Porsches from the \u201970s and \u201980s up to modern Porsche GT3 Cup cars. The\u00a0Pitt Race purpose-built\u00a0track is 40 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.The road\u00a0course in Schenley Park is a different story. The challenging stone walled\u00a0track is limited to sports cars from the \u201940s, \u201950s and \u201960s. Porsche is best represented\u00a0by the classic 356, and vintage 914\u00a0and 911 models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grand\u00a0Marshal: Ray Shaffer<\/strong><br \/>\nPorsche\u2019s Ray Shaffer is\u00a0coming home to serve as this year&#8217;s \u00a0Grand Marshal. \u00a0Ray was born and raised in the\u00a0South Hills area of Pittsburgh. Ray traces the roots of his career in the auto\u00a0industry to a chance\u00a0meeting he had with the late Coca-Cola Porsche racer, and\u00a0Sebring 12-hour-winner, Bob Akin at the 1986 PVGP.\u00a0Ray began his career at Brumos Porsche in Jacksonville,\u00a0Florida and became the General\u00a0Manager. Ray is now\u00a0the Porsche Classic Market Development Manager at Porsche Classic in\u00a0Atlanta.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Poster Artist: Burton Morris<\/strong><br \/>\nAnother special guest\u00a0coming back home is\u00a0internationally recognized Pop Artist, Burton\u00a0Morris. Best known for his bold and graphic depictions of American icons, he created the 2022 PVGP poster\u00a0that\u00a0features a Porsche 911 in the familiar red, white and blue Brumos livery.\u00a0Burton was born and raised in\u00a0Pittsburgh and earned his fine arts degree at CMU\u00a0in 1986. Burton attended the\u00a0first PVGP in 1983\u00a0when he was a sophomore.\u00a0He\u00a0vividly recalls with wonderment attending the first two year\u2019s races.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Honorary Race Director: Roy \u201cFather Viper\u201d Sjoberg<\/strong><br \/>\nThe first Chief Engineer of Viper in 1989, who inspired\u00a0Chrysler to shake a fire breathing 10 cylinder Viper out of a 4-cylinder K-Car\u00a0company is this year&#8217;s Honorary Race Director, Roy Sjoberg. He was\u00a0recruited\u00a0from General Motors in 1985 after 25 years at GM and being the right hand to\u00a0Zora Arkus-Duntov, who gave Roy the name &#8220;Father Viper\u201d. Roy\u00a0Sjoberg is a notable keynote speaker on engineering,\u00a0technical and team\u00a0building and motivational subjects. He has been a consultant to the U.S.\u00a0Air Force and ARPA on lean product design and team\u00a0concepts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blacktie &amp; Tailpipes Gala<br \/>\n<\/strong>The formal affair that kicks off the PVGP is moving to the Grand\u00a0Concourse Restaurant for the first time. This Friday night party on July 15\u00a0features a car show at Station Square. Sponsor Bobby Rahal is\u00a0auctioning a trip\u00a0to the 2023 Indy 500 to raise funds for the event&#8217;s charities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Passport to Elegance Party<\/strong><br \/>\nThis year&#8217;s hangar party lands at the Pittsburgh-Butler\u00a0Regional Airport and will take guests through the growth and innovation of the\u00a0past 100 years while immersing them in the beauty and evolution of our\u00a0automotive and aviation heritage. This festive party features scrumptious\u00a0passed hors devours, strolling food stations and top-shelf open bars. The\u00a0evening will also include live big band music, silent and live\u00a0auctions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Schenley Park\u00a0Race Weekend<\/strong><br \/>\nThe highlight of the Grand Prix is the July 23\/24\u00a0weekend in Schenley Park. 3,000 show cars parked on the golf course along with\u00a0sponsor tents and 100,000 weekend spectators watching the nation\u2019s only\u00a0wheel-to-wheel\u00a0vintage street race. British legends like MG, Triumph and Jaguar\u00a0racing against the German racers of Porsche and BMW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charity<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix was built on and\u00a0continues to support charity. Since 1983 over $6 million has been donated to\u00a0Autism-Pittsburgh and Merakey Allegheny Valley School.
