{"id":53235,"date":"2017-11-29T11:07:10","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T19:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportscardigest.com\/\/?p=53235"},"modified":"2023-12-12T00:02:47","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T00:02:47","slug":"goodwoods-new-gurney-bolster-cups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.supercars.net\/blog\/goodwoods-new-gurney-bolster-cups\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodwood Members&#8217; Meeting (2018) &#8211; New Gurney and Bolster Cups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Goodwood\u2019s 76<sup>th<\/sup> Members&#8217; Meeting, set for March 17-18, 2018, will offer a pair of new races, named for American racing icon Dan Gurney and eminent British motoring journalist John Bolster, <em>Autosport<\/em> magazine\u2019s founding technical editor.<\/p>\n<p>The Gurney Cup is intended to highlight the diversity evident in Gurney\u2019s career, and will feature sports cars both big and small in what\u2019s being billed as a \u201cDavid-and-Goliath battle,\u201d while the Bolster Cup will star pre- and post-war vintage specials of all shapes and sizes, promising an extraordinary variety of one-off machines (above, photo courtesy of Goodwood).<\/p>\n<p>Gurney\u2019s versatility allowed him to drive a wide variety of cars during his career, and become the first driver to post a victory in all the major disciplines of Formula One, Indycars, Sports Cars and Stock Cars. Beyond his accomplishments as a driver he also founded All American Racers, which fielded championship-winning efforts in Indycars and sports cars and continues today as a high-tech manufacturing concern.<\/p>\n<p>Bolster, who died in 1984, was one of the pioneers of \u201cspecials.\u201d He made his name before WWII with the super-spindly, super-light and super-quick \u201cBloody Mary,\u201d a wooden-framed, JAP motorcycle-engined, chain-driven creation. He suffered a huge accident in the ex-Prince Bira ERA R5B known as Remus during the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and while recuperating hatched a plan with Gregor Grant to publish <em>Autosport<\/em> every week.
