Racing Corvettes: The Early Years<\/h2>\n

Right up front, author Evans bills this book as simply a scrapbook of photos he has assembled, but they are photos from an indelible era of American road racing, and they focus on the U.S. automotive industry\u2019s foremost icon.<\/p>\n

Of course there is much more here than just photographs of Corvettes from 50 years ago, as the accompanying text from those who raced them then makes it an insightful and revealing look at how racing worked in those not forgotten days. The remembrances of John Fitch are featured prominently, but also providing their own memories are Dick Guldstrand, Bob Bondurant, Dick Thompson, Bill Pollack, Jim Jeffords, Pete Lovely, and Andy Porterfield,<\/p>\n

The story begins on Daytona Beach in early 1956, where Fitch took a stock Vette to a new production-car Flying Mile record of 145 mph. It then moves to Sebring, where he managed the Corvette factory effort despite the ultimately incorrect belief of marque guru Zora Arkus Duntov that the lack of proper time for preparation would spell doom.<\/p>\n
