Since its founding in 1948, Porsche has produced an array of homologation specials\u2014road-legal vehicles engineered to satisfy international motorsport regulations. Among the most significant is the Carrera GT, a supercar born from an abandoned Le Mans prototype program. Development began in 1999 as the intended successor to the 1998 Le Mans-winning 911 GT1<\/a>, but changing FIA regulations brought Porsche’s endurance racing plans to an end before the project reached competition.<\/p>\n

Rather than shelve the engineering effort, Porsche transformed the Carrera GT<\/a> into a flagship road car. Production began ahead of its 2004 debut and concluded in May 2006 after approximately 1,270 examples were assembled at the company’s Leipzig facility. Of those, only 44 North American-market cars were finished in rare Fayence Yellow, including this example currently listed for sale on Bring a Trailer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Carrera GT is defined by its race-derived engineering. It became the first production Porsche to feature a carbon-reinforced plastic (CRP) monocoque chassis, with the lightweight material also used for the body panels, rear subframe, removable roof panels, underbody, and rear diffuser. Aluminum honeycomb reinforcements added rigidity while improving heat resistance around the powertrain.<\/p>\n

Weighing just over 3,000 pounds dry, the Carrera GT employs a GT1-inspired double-wishbone suspension with pushrod-operated inboard coilover dampers and centrally mounted anti-roll bars. Forged magnesium wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires deliver exceptional grip, while Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes with six-piston calipers and 15-inch carbon-ceramic discs provide immense stopping power.<\/p>\n

Mounted behind the cockpit is a naturally aspirated 5.7-liter V-10 producing 605 horsepower. Originally developed for Porsche’s canceled Le Mans program, the all-aluminum engine serves as a stressed member of the chassis and incorporates VarioCam variable valve timing, titanium connecting rods, dry-sump lubrication, and Bosch Motronic engine management.<\/p>\n

Modern comforts include air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors, a Porsche Online Pro CD audio system, and a fitted leather luggage set. Completing the experience is the iconic high-mounted shifter topped with a laminated beechwood knob, a tribute to the legendary Porsche 917<\/a> race car and a fitting reminder of the Carrera GT’s motorsport heritage.<\/p>\n
