McLaren Automotive has unveiled the McL 6GT at Monterey Car Week 2026, introducing a new kind of McLaren that looks to the company\u2019s earliest road-car ambitions while pointing firmly toward its future.<\/p>\n

Inspired by the unrealized McLaren M6GT conceived by founder Bruce McLaren, the McL 6GT reimagines the spirit of that original supercar dream with more than six decades of technological development. The result is a dramatic, low-slung two-seat machine that combines carbon-fibre construction, V8 power and, most significantly, a six-speed manual transmission driving the rear wheels.<\/p>\n

That makes the McL 6GT the first McLaren since the legendary F1 to feature an authentic manual gearbox. More than a design exercise, the McL 6GT previews a new, highly exclusive tier of McLaren supercars positioned beyond the company\u2019s core and expanded model ranges. A production version is scheduled to arrive in 2028.<\/p>\n

A supercar built around driver connection<\/h3>\n

At the heart of the McL 6GT is an increasingly rare idea: the driving experience should feel mechanical, tactile and deliberate. Rather than relying solely on electronic interfaces and automated systems, McLaren has focused on creating physical interaction between driver and machine. Hydraulic steering, tactile switchgear and exposed mechanical details are designed to make every input feel meaningful.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The interior uses knurled machined-aluminium controls and carefully considered ergonomics, while the manual gear selector has been designed around the feel and movement of each shift. Its upright incorporates a three-dimensional Speedy Kiwi, referencing one of the earliest symbols associated with McLaren. The result is intended to make the driver feel connected not only to the car’s performance, but to the mechanical processes that create it.<\/p>\n

Inspired by Bruce McLaren’s M6GT<\/h3>\n

The M6GT holds a unique place in McLaren history. Conceived by Bruce McLaren as a road-going evolution of the racing technology surrounding the M6 programme, the project was intended to become the founder’s own supercar.<\/p>\n

McLaren Special Operations recently brought that vision back to life with a meticulously assembled one-off recreation of the original M6GT, unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The McL 6GT takes that historical connection much further. Its name links McLaren’s racing heritage with the company’s early road-car ambitions, creating a bridge between the world Bruce McLaren built on the track and the road-car future he never had the opportunity to complete.<\/p>\n

1960s inspiration, 21st-century execution<\/h3>\n

The visual connection to the M6GT is immediately apparent, but McLaren has avoided simply recreating the original. The McL 6GT adopts the low, wide proportions of the 1960s sports prototypes that inspired the M6GT. Its nose sits extremely low, while the body flows rearward into a distinctive Kammback tail.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Rather than separating the cabin from the bodywork, the roof appears to emerge naturally from the surrounding surfaces before flowing into the rear deck and engine cover. The result is an exceptionally clean silhouette that gives the impression of a single, continuous form.<\/p>\n

Aerodynamic efficiency is integrated into that shape rather than imposed upon it. One of the most distinctive details is the Racing Loop motif, inspired by the original M6GT’s taillights and incorporated into the car’s airflow architecture. Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT number plate has also been reinterpreted as a subtle tone-on-tone graphic.<\/p>\n

His signature appears in the engine bay, while the Speedy Kiwi is discreetly etched into the fuel-filler cap. Inside, boxed quilting provides another reference to McLaren’s past, while a modern digital instrument display retains the visual clarity and simplicity of the original concept.<\/p>\n

Carbon fibre at its core<\/h3>\n

Lightweight construction remains fundamental to McLaren’s philosophy, and the McL 6GT pushes that principle into its new interpretation of the brand’s heritage. The car uses a super-lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque combined with carbon-fibre bodywork, creating the structural foundation for its performance and driving character.<\/p>\n

Exposed gloss carbon fibre inside the cabin provides a direct visual connection to McLaren’s racing heritage while also making the construction itself part of the design. The philosophy is straightforward: every component should contribute to performance, purity or driver involvement.<\/p>\n

A different kind of McLaren<\/h3>\n

The McL 6GT is more than a tribute to an unfinished chapter of McLaren history. It signals the company’s intention to explore a more emotional and exclusive type of supercar.<\/p>\n
