New Zealand\u2019s Ayrburn Classic is quickly carving out its own place among the world\u2019s great automotive gatherings. Combining rare and historic automobiles with spectacular scenery, gardens, food and wine, the three-day festival offers an experience that goes well beyond a traditional concours.<\/p>\n

For enthusiasts with events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Amelia Island Concours d\u2019Elegance or Pebble Beach Concours d\u2019Elegance on their bucket list, Ayrburn Classic deserves a spot on that list as well.<\/p>\n

Held annually at the spectacular Ayrburn precinct near Arrowtown, just outside Queenstown, the event celebrates automotive heritage, innovation and the culture surrounding collectible cars. Its second edition took place in February, and its rapid growth has already attracted international attention.<\/p>\n

The International Historic Motoring Awards in London named Ayrburn Classic a finalist for its Breakthrough Event of the Year award. Attendance has also exploded, growing to more than 9,000 visitors in just two years.<\/p>\n

A Concours with a spectacular backdrop<\/h3>\n

Part of Ayrburn Classic\u2019s appeal is its location. The Ayrburn precinct is already one of New Zealand\u2019s premier food-and-wine destinations, welcoming roughly one million visitors each year. Its restaurants and bars, manicured gardens, ponds and dramatic mountain scenery provide an unusually beautiful backdrop for a major collector-car event.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Against that setting, the cars become part of a much larger experience. This year’s event featured around 500 significant vehicles spread across multiple classes, creating a diverse collection ranging from European exotics and American muscle cars to legendary racing machines and unusual vintage automobiles powered by aircraft engines.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Some of those cars aren’t simply meant to be admired\u2014they’re meant to be heard. Their massive engines provided plenty of drama during the weekend, including a crowd-pleasing Crackle Off that turned the event into a mechanical symphony.<\/p>\n

Three days of cars, culture and competition<\/h3>\n

Ayrburn Classic’s schedule began Friday with the Tour d\u2019Elegance, a charity drive through the spectacular Wakatipu Basin. The tour was followed by the event’s welcome cocktail party.<\/p>\n

Saturday opened the main motoring showcase to the public, with demonstrations, vehicle unveilings and presentations highlighting extensive restoration projects and previously unseen automobiles. The afternoon brought another major attraction: the Ayrburn Classic Live Auction, where approximately 40 cars crossed the auction block.<\/p>\n

Sunday continued the festivities with Fashions on the Field, adding another layer of style to an already visually spectacular weekend. Six women also presented their cars on the Dell, one of the event’s central display areas, speaking to thousands of visitors about their passion for automobiles.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s answer to the world’s great motoring festivals?<\/h3>\n

Ayrburn Classic is still a young event, but its trajectory is hard to ignore. The combination of a world-class setting, an increasingly significant collection of automobiles, live demonstrations, auctions and a strong emphasis on hospitality gives the event a character distinctly different from a traditional concours.<\/p>\n
