Ferrari unveiled the 550 Maranello at the famous German circuit, returning its two-seat flagship to a front-engined V12 layout for the first time since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona had been replaced by the mid-engined Berlinetta Boxer. The 456 GT had already brought a front-mounted V12 back to Ferrari’s lineup in 1992, but as a 2+2. The 550 restored the classic front-engined, two-seat V12 GT to the top of the range. Its 5.5-liter V12 produced 485 PS (478 hp) at 7,000 rpm and 419 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transaxle. Ferrari quoted 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph, proving that a front-engined grand tourer could match the performance of the mid-engined cars that had led Ferrari’s range for more than two decades. Production ran from 1996 to 2001, with 3,083 examples built.

Background and Origins

Credit: Bring a Trailer

From the 365 GT4 BB of the early 1970s through the Testarossa, 512 TR and F512 M, Ferrari’s flagship two-seater had used a mid-mounted flat-12. The 550 shared its basic architecture and engine family with the 456 GT, but it was more than a shortened version of that car. Its wheelbase was reduced to 2,500 millimeters, and it received its own tuning and a sportier character. The rear-mounted transaxle, chassis design, suspension tuning and weight distribution were central to the car’s handling, supported by electronic traction control. The name followed Ferrari tradition: 550 referred to the engine’s 5.5-liter displacement, while Maranello honored the town that is home to the factory.

Design and Engineering

Credit: Bring a Trailer

The heart of the 550 was the Tipo F133A, a 5,474-cubic-centimeter, 65-degree V12 with four overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The first was Italtecnica, whose 550 Millennio entered the FIA GT Championship in 2000. Championship organizer Stéphane Ratel had helped introduce a technical passport system that allowed specialist builders to homologate GT cars independently of the manufacturer, and Prodrive used the same system to create its own version.

The Prodrive car, funded by French shipping magnate Frédéric Dor through his Care Racing Development operation, became the most successful racing 550. Prodrive started with complete road cars and removed about 550 kilograms to reach the GT class minimum weight of 1,100 kilograms. The racing V12 was enlarged to 5.9 liters. The car began competing in the FIA GT Championship in 2001 and won at the A1-Ring and Jarama in its first season. In 2003, Tomáš Enge, Peter Kox and Jamie Davies drove the Prodrive-run No. 88 car to the GTS class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, finishing tenth overall and 10 laps ahead of the second-place Corvette. It was Ferrari’s first GT class victory at Le Mans since 1981 and remains the last Le Mans win for a V12 Ferrari. Later that year, Prodrive took a 1-2 finish in the GTS class at Petit Le Mans, with Kox, Enge and Alain Menu winning and finishing fifth overall.

Credit: Girardo & Co

Customer teams also achieved major success with the Prodrive-built 550. BMS Scuderia Italia won the FIA GT Championship in 2003, with Thomas Biagi and Matteo Bobbi taking the drivers’ title, and won again in 2004, when Fabrizio Gollin and Luca Cappellari became champions. In both seasons, BMS drivers finished first, second and third in the standings. A BMS 550 also won the 2004 Spa 24 Hours outright, and Lilian Bryner became the first woman to win the race. In 2005, Gabriele Gardel won the FIA GT drivers’ title for Larbre Compétition, which had already won the 2004 Le Mans Endurance Series GT1 title with a 550. Ferrari itself commissioned N.Technology to build two 550 GTC development cars in 2003. These were loaned to JMB Racing for selected events and formed a separate program from Prodrive’s. According to Keith Bluemel’s history of the program, the ten Prodrive-built cars entered 343 races between 2001 and 2008, winning 69 of them.

Specifications

Engine: Ferrari Tipo F133A 65-degree V12, 5,474cc, DOHC per bank, 48 valves, 10.8:1 compression

Power: 485 PS (478 hp) at 7,000 rpm

Torque: 419 lb-ft (568 Nm) at 5,000 rpm

Transmission: Six-speed manual transaxle, rear-wheel drive

Chassis: Tubular steel space frame with aluminum body panels

Suspension: Double wishbones front and rear, electronically adjustable dampers

Steering: Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance

Weight: 1,690 kg / 3,726 lbs (dry)

Aerodynamics: Drag coefficient of 0.33

Performance: 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds, 199 mph / 320 km/h top speed

Production and Legacy

Credit: Bring a Trailer

Ferrari built 3,083 550 Maranellos between 1996 and 2001.
