Mercedes-Benz displayed the CLK GTR Straßenversion at the Frankfurt Motor Show, five months after the racing CLK GTR had made its debut at Hockenheim. It was the road-legal version of the GT1 race car that Mercedes and AMG had built for the new FIA GT Championship, and it was a competition car adapted for public roads, sharing the racing version’s carbon-fiber monocoque, mid-mounted V12 layout and most of its bodywork. Its naturally aspirated 6.9-liter V12 produced 612 PS (604 hp) at 6,800 rpm and drove the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox. Mercedes quoted 0-62 mph in about 3.7 seconds and a top speed above 199 mph. With a price of about $1.5 million, Guinness World Records recognized the CLK GTR as the world’s most expensive production car. HWA ultimately built 20 coupes and six roadsters for customers, making the CLK GTR one of the rarest and most valuable Mercedes-Benz road cars.

Background and Origins

Credit: Silodrome

When the DTM and its international successor, the ITC, ended after the 1996 season, Mercedes-Benz needed a new international racing program. The FIA GT Championship, which launched in 1997, offered a high-profile alternative, but its GT1 class had become an arms race. Porsche had developed the purpose-built 911 GT1, and the McLaren F1 GTR was already established. Rather than adapt a production car, Mercedes decided to build a new race car first and then produce the road versions required by the rules.

Credit: Silodrome

The Mercedes board gave AMG the project on December 5, 1996, and the schedule was extremely tight. The V12 first ran on the dyno shortly before Christmas, and according to period accounts, AMG quietly acquired a McLaren F1 GTR to use as a test mule while its own chassis was still being completed. The finished CLK GTR made its first test runs about 128 days after the first sketches. FIA GT rules required 25 road cars for homologation, but enforcement at the time was loose. In early April 1997, only days before the season opener, Mercedes presented the race cars and a single road car to FIA officials, along with a commitment to build the remaining examples. AMG developed the racing car, while HWA, the motorsport company founded by AMG co-founder Hans Werner Aufrecht, later built the customer road cars in Affalterbach.

Design and Engineering

Credit: Silodrome

The Straßenversion was a race car adapted for the road rather than a road car with racing features. Bernd Schneider took pole position and set the fastest lap but retired with a brake problem. Mercedes improved quickly, winning six of the 11 races, including four one-two finishes. The team won the championship, and Schneider took the drivers’ title after a close fight with the McLaren F1 GTRs.

The CLK GTR began the 1998 season before Mercedes introduced the CLK LM, which used a naturally aspirated V8 and revised bodywork designed for Le Mans. Although neither factory CLK LM finished the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans, Mercedes won every round of the 1998 FIA GT Championship with the two cars. Klaus Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta won the drivers’ title, and Mercedes again won the teams’ championship. With rival manufacturers withdrawing and no serious competition left for Mercedes, the FIA GT Championship dropped its GT1 category for 1999. That ended the CLK GTR family’s racing career after two seasons and two championships. Mercedes then developed the CLR for Le Mans in 1999, but withdrew after a series of airborne accidents.

Specifications

Engine: Mercedes-Benz M297 V12 (M120-derived), 6,898cc, DOHC per bank, 48 valves

Power: 612 PS (604 hp) at 6,800 rpm

Torque: 731 Nm (539 lb-ft)

Transmission: Six-speed sequential, rear-wheel drive

Chassis: Carbon-fiber monocoque, engine and transaxle as stressed members

Body: Carbon fiber

Suspension: Double wishbones front and rear

Weight: 1,440 kg / 3,175 lbs (EU unladen weight)

Performance: 0-62 mph in approximately 3.7 seconds, top speed above 199 mph / 320 km/h

Production and Legacy

Interest in the CLK GTR far exceeded supply. According to RM Sotheby’s, about 300 prospective buyers applied for the 25 homologation cars. Customer coupes entered production in late 1998, more than a year after the race car had won its first championship, and the coupe run ended in mid-1999. One roadster was built during that period, and its success led HWA to approve five more, built later on spare CLK GTR chassis. Including two prototypes, total production is commonly reported as 28 cars: 20 coupes, six roadsters and the two prototypes. Guinness listed the CLK GTR, priced at $1,547,620, as the most expensive production car in the world.

Credit: Silodrome

The CLK GTR belongs to a small group of late-1990s GT1 homologation specials, alongside the Porsche 911 GT1 Straßenversion and the Toyota GT-One road car, which were essentially race cars adapted for public roads.
