On the eve of the Paris Motor Show, Ferrari unveiled the Testarossa at the Lido nightclub on the Champs-Élysées. It replaced the 512 BBi as the flagship of Ferrari’s 12-cylinder range. Its mid-mounted 4.9-liter flat-12 produced 390 PS (385 hp) at 6,300 rpm, and Ferrari quoted a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph). The Testarossa was wider, more comfortable and more refined than the Berlinetta Boxer it replaced, but its most important feature was its look. Pininfarina’s design, with long side strakes running from the doors to the rear fenders, became one of the defining shapes of the 1980s. Production ran from 1984 to 1991, with 7,177 examples built, making it one of Ferrari’s most successful 12-cylinder models up to that time.

Background and Origins

Credit: Bring a Trailer

The Testarossa grew out of the shortcomings of the Berlinetta Boxer. The 512 BBi was fast, but its front-mounted radiator added heat to the cabin, and both comfort and luggage space were limited. Ferrari also wanted a flagship designed with international markets in mind, including the United States, where the Boxer had never been officially sold. The new car kept the mid-engined flat-12 layout while addressing these problems and creating a more practical and comfortable flagship.

The name came from Ferrari’s racing history. Testa Rossa means “red head” in Italian and referred to the red-painted cam covers on the 250 Testa Rossa sports racing cars of the late 1950s, which won Le Mans in 1958, 1960 and 1961. The new Testarossa continued the tradition with red cam covers on its flat-12. Ferrari revealed the car to selected dealers in Modena on September 24, 1984. Ferrari called it a flat-12, but mechanically it was a 180-degree V12, since opposing cylinders shared crankpins. It was Ferrari’s first road-car flat-12 with four valves per cylinder, using double overhead camshafts per bank, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication. In European form, it produced 390 PS at 6,300 rpm and 490 Nm (361 lb-ft) of torque at 4,500 rpm. US-market cars, fitted with catalytic converters, produced 380 hp at 5,750 rpm. Power went to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox with Ferrari’s traditional gated shifter.

Credit: Bring a Trailer

The biggest engineering change was the cooling system. Instead of the Boxer’s single front radiator, the Testarossa used two radiators mounted ahead of the rear wheels. This reduced heat in the cabin, made the front luggage compartment more useful and shaped the car’s design, since the radiators needed large side intakes. The Testarossa was also wider than the Boxer, particularly at the rear, which improved stability, and wider rear wheels improved traction. The chassis used a tubular steel frame. Most of the outer body, including the hood, engine cover and rear fenders, was aluminum, while the doors and roof were made of galvanized steel. Ferrari quoted 0-100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 290 km/h (180 mph). Some contemporary road tests recorded slightly higher top speeds.

Styling

Pininfarina’s design team, led by Leonardo Fioravanti, included Emanuele Nicosia, Ian Cameron, Guido Campoli and Diego Ottina. Nicosia originated the design. Its most distinctive feature came directly from the engineering: the radiator intakes had to be large, and Fioravanti later recalled that German regulations restricted large open side intakes. Pininfarina’s solution was to cover them with horizontal fins, which also helped manage airflow. These “cheese grater” strakes ran along the doors and rear fenders, emphasized the car’s width and became its signature. Similar strakes later appeared on the 348, and the look influenced many other cars of the era.

Credit: Bring a Trailer

Early Testarossas had two other distinctive features. The first was a single mirror mounted high on the driver’s-side windscreen pillar, known as the monospecchio. It was positioned there to give the driver a view past the wide rear fenders, reportedly because of Ferrari’s interpretation of visibility regulations. During 1986, Ferrari began replacing it with conventional door-mounted mirrors on both sides, and dual mirrors became standard for the 1987 model year. Early cars also used 16-inch wheels with a single center-locking nut, known as monodado, fitted with Michelin TRX tires. Partway through 1988, Ferrari switched to a conventional five-bolt design, making tire changes much easier. Today, early single-mirror, center-lock cars are especially sought after by collectors, although condition, originality and history remain the main factors in any car’s value.

Interior

Credit: Bring a Trailer

The Testarossa’s cabin was much more comfortable than the Boxer’s. Luggage could be carried in the front compartment and behind the seats, and fitted Schedoni luggage was available to make the most of that space.

Credit: Bring a Trailer

The gated shifter, large steering wheel and low seating position kept the character of a traditional Ferrari. Its appearances in Miami Vice and Sega’s Out Run made it famous beyond the world of car enthusiasts, and its side strakes became one of the most recognizable design features of the decade.
