Ferrari\u2019s naturally aspirated V12 grand tourers have evolved through decades of engineering development, with increases in power, revised transmissions, and increasingly sophisticated performance technology. In a new carwow<\/a> drag-racing challenge, Mat Watson brings four generations of Ferrari V12 performance together to investigate whether the latest models can establish a clear advantage over their predecessors.<\/p>\n

The lineup features the modern 12Cilindri Spider, the 812 GTS, the F12 Berlinetta, and the 599 GTB Fiorano. All four use front-mounted V12 engines driving the rear wheels, but differences in output, weight, and transmission design create an intriguing comparison.<\/p>\n

Four V12s, Four Different Performance Profiles<\/h2>\n

At the oldest end of the lineup, the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano<\/a> pairs a naturally aspirated 6.0-liter V12 producing 620 horsepower and 608 Nm of torque with a six-speed automated manual transmission. Weighing 1,690 kg, it represents an earlier approach to combining high-revving engine performance with grand touring capability.<\/p>\n

The F12berlinetta<\/a> raises the stakes with a 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 generating 740 horsepower and 690 Nm. Its seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 1,630 kg kerb weight make it the lightest contender, providing an important counterpoint to the newer cars’ greater power outputs.<\/p>\n

The 812 GTS<\/a> advances the formula with a 6.5-liter V12 producing 800 horsepower and 718 Nm, delivered through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Despite its 1,700 kg weight, it offers a substantial increase in output over the F12.<\/p>\n

At the top of the lineup, the 12Cilindri Spider<\/a> develops 830 horsepower from its 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12. Its eight-speed dual-clutch transmission represents the latest evolution of Ferrari’s powertrain technology, although its approximately 1,720 kg weight makes it the heaviest car in the group.<\/p>\n
