SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

    sl55 amg without a doubt

  2. I'm getting a new car, but i don't know which to choose from...
Should I get the SL55? or the Turbo?
it's really frustrating me...since the level of performance are about the same, and so as their prices...SL provides more comfort, where on the other hand, Turbo has all the fun a driver may request...and the sound...

    Help~~~~~~~

  3. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

Get the Turbo!!! The sounds are increddible!!! Mercedes is not a real sport car. And automatic transmission sucks...<!-- Signature -->

Get both. <IMG SRC="http://www.supercarforums.com/servlets/cMsg/html/emoticons/smile.gif"> I've got the AMG SL 55 on the way and the new Porsche RUF 911 Turbo R. One for my drive to work on a nice day, the other for the track. There's nothing wrong with getting both. It just depends on what you want.

  7. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

i would say : "buy the turbo!".But on the other hand , marcedes sl55amg si a very good car.But like the others , the automatic gearbox sucks! .You buy a car with that performance to "realy drive it" , and porsche has the advantage of all-wheel-drive sistem! , and let's be seriouse , a porsche is a porsche! If you want luxury and performance ( because luxury is on the first place ) you buy the mercedes , and if you want a real sports car , where performance if on first place , buy the Turbo.....

    you must go for turbo....

  11. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

Well I would probably take the SL55 AMG. That's one of the most beautiful cars I've seen in a while. It's luxury, speed, comfort and style in one packet. It might be even more fun to drive than the Turbo because the awd of the Turbo tends to understeer. And remember the SL is a coupe and roadster at the same time.

And for all those people who think that automatic transmissions take away the fun from driving. If the only fun thing about driving is the manual transmission you could by only a clutch and a manual transmission and install it into a chair at home and play around it all day infront of the TV. There you would have all the fun needed for driving, you wouldnt even have to buy a car. The automatic transmission can be faster than any manual if you add an automatic kit into the car, And those kits dont cost much. Automatic transmissions arent so bad as most people think.

So I'd take the SL55 because IMO it's better packet. Overall it's better, it has even a larger trunk.<!-- Signature -->

both cars are fantastic but i think merc is a MERC.
as they say that the performance is almost the same so why dont a super luxury instead of a "sound".if u want sound then better choose a ferrari.SL 55,new SL55,simply uncomparable.
but i cant afford either of these magnificant cars ;)

  15. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

And anyway, I think the SL55 AMG comes as a clutchless manual. So it comes with a paddle shift with the gear changes behind the steering wheel like in F1 cars. I'm not sure though, you can ask your Mercedes dealer. And the Mercedes has also new high technology geatures in it like the SBC brakes which are the most advanced brakes seen on normal road cars nowdays. It has also the ABC suspernsion system and much more. Technologically the SL55 is more advanced. And if you seek for heritage then the SL55 is the better choice. It's the newest member of the legendary SL series which was started bu the 1954 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing, one of the most legendary and beautiful cars ever IMO.<!-- Signature -->

  16. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

The SL55 does have a clutchless manual, however there are not paddles behind the steering wheel like the Ferrari 360, or the Aston Martin Vanquish. Mercedes has a similar setup as the Porsche Tiptronic or the Chrysler Autostick. There is a slot on the gear shift that you slide the selector to then a simple tap upwards on the shifter upshifts and a downward tap will downshift. It's a very slick setup that allows the driver to in fact "drive the car" with a manual transmission, but without the hassle of a clutch. If you're ever in heavy traffic, well, leave it in the "automatic" mode. Great engineering.

  17. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

    Well...
    TURBO ROCKS!!!
if u don't want it can u buy me one?
    anyways
how can u people say that the Porsche is not a lux car?
Heated leather seats, NICE sound in and out!!!
and when u open and close the doors, the windows goes down a bit to sit under the seal.
u guys forget that the turbos have those EXCELLENT PCCB brakes
as if the regular steel ones werent enough for good brakes
they had to make ceramic ones that will never warp and stop even faster.
if u want to impress, i think the general crowd of pedestrians and drivers will notice a merc more than a porsche these days
but for those like us who know our cars, the turbo will definatly stand out, especially with it's extendable wing(very coo). But if u want more satisfaction with your car, i think the non sluggish, very nimble, awd, non-understeering turbo is the better choice. And u'll be able to smoke even the Modena off the line.
on another note, have u seen the sportec turbo? 600hp, 3.3 secs to 60 (Faster than the 3.6 sec mclaren). But that may be a little too expensive.

  18. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

    in addition
Porsche also has a navigation system
it's not fair for anyone to tell u which car to buy just cuz it's u'r car and everyone has different tastes
but i know for sure that when the merc comes out, u'r not gonna be the only one driving it, whereas with the porsche, it's basically just you.I just want to see more good cars on the road like the turbo (not to say the merc isn't good, just that i see enough of them already and they're noses are starting to get repetitive).
u should go to both company's sites, go to both dealerships. And probably with a deposit, test drive each. Cuz in the end, that's all that really matters.
oh and if u could, please tell us when the time comes, which car u chose.<!-- Signature -->

And the Merc has the most advanced braking system on the market, the SBC braking system, and it has ceramic brakes. The Sensotronic Braking System brakes every tyre individually and its controlled by severaö computer chips. I dont know how it exactly works but its great innovation.

Oh and BTW, Auto, motor & sport just test drove the SL500 and they said it had one of the best suspension charcterisitcs on the market. The car is very comfortable like a Merc should be and its very sporty at the same time. And that was only the SL500. For even more sportyness buy the SL55 AMG.<!-- Signature -->

  20. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

I love both the Porsche and off course the Mercedes cars, but if I were to choose from the Porsche and the Mercedes-benz sl 55 amg then i would surely choose the mercedes. i would do that because the car is just so beautifull that i instantly fell in love with it the minute i looked it up.

  21. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

    IMO the Turbo wins out.
I took a vote among my friends, and maybe we are just dumb kids, but when I asked what each person thought of When I said Mercedes. The concensoius was "you dad's everyday driver", cool for cruising but not a racer. On the other hand, when Porsche was mention people thought or kicking ass and taking names.
As for the Lux issue, I've sat in a Cl 55 AMG and in the 2001 911 Turbo. Both had leather, both had cool audio, and Both had obvious notes of quality craftsmanship. It may be that the Merc is know for Lux, but the porsche was not dirty dog when it came to creature features.
I also believe that someone mentioned the fairer sex, well before they see the car you have to get them to it. If you say "Oh, mine's the Porsche." She's going to know what the car looks like. If you say," Oh, mine's the Merc (Mercedes)." Your talking about anything from a C class to the Sl 55 AMG. So, the name is important.

Well that is my little shpeel. In either event I would love to drive them both.

    Had another thought.

    Two questions:

    1) Which would you rather take you lady in?
    2) Which would you rather race with if it was for Pink slips?

  23. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

can't say that i've ever been in either car, but i have been in the carrera, and it's NICE!!!
i thought it was pretty luxurious.
it could just be because it's the only true sportscar i've been in but i don't think i could love anything like that carrera (other than the turbo or GT2 of course). It's just because their power is not so obvious. Some people have no idea how great porsche's are. I didn't even know until i rode in one (take your kids to work day, went with my friend and his dad. He's a porsche mechanic) Anyways, nice tone, very tight feeling car. What I mean is it's not a bit wishy washy. Pretty darn fast, and very good brakes. And that's only the carrera. With the Turbo you get way more power, all wheel drive, a cool two piece pop-up spoiler, and you can opt for the even better ceramic brakes. I think the reason i like the Turbo soooo much is just because it's so well rounded. Smallish shape, great aerodynamics, light wieght, supoib handling, very powerful engine, back seat. (Although Mr. Peck says otherwise, and OWNS a Ruf) I think that the Turbo IS a daily driver, just because it's not sooooo eye catching to someone who doesn't know cars. Anyone can tell what a Ferrari is, but maybe not a Porsche. You can't really trust my opinion though, just because it's naturally going to be biased towards the Turbo since it's my fave. But listen to everyone else!!!<!-- Signature -->

  24. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

I am a big benz fan so I am partial to the SL, but it comes down to what you want, they are both fun, the porche has its gear box, but the SL has all those gadgets like the retractable hardtop. If you wanted to make heads turn as you drive by pick the benz.

  25. Re: SL55? or Porsche 996 Turbo?

I don't know why but i Love BENZ but if you want a real Sports Car get a Lingenfelter Stage 2 Vette THEY ARE AMAZING
