The Porsche 908/3 is undeniably a unique car. Specifically crafted by Porsche for competition on only two circuits during the 1970 and 1971 World Sportscar Championship seasons—the Targa Florio and the Nürburgring Nordschleife—its lightweight design was revolutionary yet maintained exceptional weight distribution.
Powered by a reliable and potent eight-cylinder flat 908 engine, which underwent initial testing in autumn 1967, it was developed for the three-liter prototypes used from 1968 onwards. The air-cooled 2,997 cc twin-valve engine initially produced approximately 340 hp, later increasing to 370 hp.
The engine was also optimized for weight, featuring components such as titanium connecting rods, aluminum cylinders and cylinder heads, magnesium cover, and, starting in 1969, a magnesium alloy crankcase, collectively reducing its weight to around 180 kilograms.
