A brand-new series of historic races, for the Sir Stirling Moss Trophy, has been launched by Motor Racing Legends (MRL). Inspired by the success of the one-off race bearing Mossโs name at the Algarve in October, the new series will be for genuine, pre-1961 sports cars and sports racers.
โThe reaction from competitors to the Sir Stirling Moss Trophy race at the Algarve was overwhelming,โ explained MRLโs Duncan Wiltshire, โso much so that we want to offer the experience as a regular feature on our calendar. Our aim is to offer the most authentic historic motor racing possible, with longer, two-driver races at high-profile meetings. The Sir Stirling Moss Trophy, supported by JD Classics, will build on Motor Racing Legendsโ ethos of inviting only genuine cars built to period specifications, with an expectation of driving standards that are โgentlemanlyโ as well as highly competitive.
โWe would not be launching this series were it not for the strong and persistent message from our racers that reinforces the desire for longer, two-driver races, with strict eligibility restrictions and careful scrutineering, to make historic motor racing as close to the โoriginalโ experience as possible. This is what our racers enjoyed at the Algarveโand what they have asked us to provide more of in 2010.
โWhat has finally enabled us to take this big step is the help and support of, first, Sir Stirling Moss, in allowing us the great honor of using his name; and secondly, the world-famous classic cars sales and restoration enterprise JD Classics, which has generously stepped in as series sponsor.โ
The new Sir Stirling Moss Trophy will absorb the current BRDC Historic Sportscars series, but extend the entry criteria to include GTs as well.ย The full 2010 calendar is expected soon, but provisionally includes: the Grand Prix de lโAge dโOr at Dijon; the Silverstone Classic; the Oulton Park Gold Cup; the Six-Hours meeting at Spa; and the Algarve Historic Festival.
