Porsche Unveils New 911 Cup and GT3 R Race Cars

Porsche have just unveiled the latest versions of their popular race car variants.

The new 911 Cup—renamed from “GT3 Cup”, to more accurately depict the one-make series it participates in—will begin competing in the popular Porsche Carrera Cup series in 2026. Based on the “GT” production cars, this race-only 911 Cup has been improved upon its predecessor in every area. For starters, the 4.0L 6-cylinder boxer engine now produces 520 PS, or roughly 10 PS more than the outgoing car, and is complemented by a more robust 6-speed sequential dog gearbox. Braking performance has improved too, with larger 380mm front rotors forming part of an equation that improves stopping power and durability. Additionally, upgraded aerodynamics and a design language more closely resembling the latest 992.2 GT3 road car are at play, along with a more simplified cockpit to enhance the race car’s driver centricity and ease-of-use.

There’s also the new 911 GT3 R—competing in the GT3 division of numerous open-make race series internationally—which has similarly undergone a reimagination for the upcoming season. Improving upon the original 992-gen version of the race car, first revealed in 2023, the highly successful platform is now sharper and more capable than ever before. One of the most notable features are the new air vents over the front wheel arches, which Porsche claims to be a change which contributes to significantly improving the race car’s aerodynamics. Ultimately, Porsche engineers have set out to create a 911 GT3 R that “behaves more precisely under braking and remains easier to control”. The 4.2L 6-cylinder boxer engine (along with the entire drivetrain) in the latest 911 GT3 R remains largely unchanged, still producing up to a maximum of 565 PS depending on BoP rules.
