The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16: the most extreme AMG track car yet

Mercedes-AMG has taken its customer racing portfolio to new heights with the unveiling of the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16, a limited-run, track-focused machine that blends Formula 1 DNA with brutal performance and exclusivity. Based on the GT2 introduced in late 2022, this latest evolution is the most powerful Mercedes-AMG GT ever built, and with only 30 units to be produced, itโ€™s destined to become an instant collectorโ€™s item.

At its heart, the GT2 Edition W16 packs AMGโ€™s familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, but here itโ€™s been tuned beyond recognition. Thanks to revised turbochargers and updated engine electronics, the output surges to a staggering 830 hp (610 kW). Thatโ€™s nearly 120 hp more than the standard GT2. One of its party tricks is the Push2Pass system. At the push of a steering wheel button, boost pressure rises, unleashing an extra 100 hp and 200 Nm of torque โ€“ taking total torque to 1000 Nm. Combine that with a race-bred lightweight construction (just 1,430 kg) and magnesium wheels inspired by AMGโ€™s Formula 1 car, and the GT2 Edition W16 delivers an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of around 1.7 kg per horsepower.

Like in F1, aerodynamics play a starring role. New active louvres above the front wheels, a larger front diffuser, reshaped mirrors, and a carbon lip spoiler improve balance. The real highlight? A Drag Reduction System (DRS) straight out of Formula 1. At the press of a button, the rear wing flattens to reduce drag, pushing top speed past 320 km/h. Power is fed through a six-speed sequential racing gearbox mounted in a rear transaxle layout, connected by a carbon torque tube for maximum rigidity. Fully adjustable motorsport dampers and four-stage stabilizers ensure the GT2 Edition W16 can be dialed in for any circuit, while ABS, traction control, and advanced safety equipment mirror AMGโ€™s GT customer racing cars.

This is not a homologated racing car, which means AMG wasnโ€™t constrained by FIA rulebooks. Instead, the GT2 Edition W16 is built purely for track-day thrills, setting its own benchmarks. Visually, the GT2 Edition W16 makes no secret of its F1 inspiration. The bodywork wears a hand-painted star pattern wrapping the rear flanks, accented by the familiar PETRONAS green of AMGโ€™s Formula 1 team. Inside, matte carbon fibre dominates, while PETRONAS accents brighten the seat trim, door panels, and centre console.

Every car carries a unique badge, โ€œ1 of 30โ€, on the console, reinforcing its exclusivity. And in a personal touch, the door sills are hand-signed by Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 driver and patron of the car.

Mercedes-AMG hasnโ€™t compromised on safety. Like the GT2 itโ€™s based on, the Edition W16 features a carbon safety cell integrated into the chassis, a five-point harness, fire extinguisher, safety tank, emergency hatch, ABS, and traction control. For those pushing it to the limit, confidence and protection are guaranteed.

The handover of each GT2 Edition W16 will be as exclusive as the car itself. Owners will take delivery during a private event at a European racetrack, complete with driving sessions, a technical briefing, and a meet & greet with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team. Each car comes with a custom AMG car cover, plus racing gear from OMP and BELL Helmets styled after the official F1 team kit.

With only 30 units worldwide, the Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 is more than a car, itโ€™s a celebration of AMGโ€™s racing heritage and Formula 1 technology distilled into a track-day masterpiece. The Mercedes-AMG GT2 Edition W16 isnโ€™t just the most powerful AMG GT ever, itโ€™s a track-only collectorโ€™s dream that bridges the gap between GT racing and Formula 1 performance.
