One of the rarest McLaren hypercars ever built will cross the auction block at RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction next month, with this 2014 McLaren P1 GT by Lanzante expected to achieve $3.5 million. Representing the pinnacle of road-legal track engineering, the bespoke machine pays tribute to the legendary McLaren F1 GT “Longtail”, blending uncompromising circuit performance with carefully integrated road-going usability.
Developed by Lanzante, the renowned British engineering firm responsible for running the McLaren F1 GTR that claimed outright victory at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, the P1 GT transforms the already extreme P1 GTR into a fully road-legal hypercar. Inspired by the ultra-exclusive 1997 McLaren F1 GT Longtail—of which only three production examples were built—the P1 GT adopts dramatic Longtail styling with an extended rear body, an enlarged front splitter, louvered front fenders, an F1 GT-inspired roof scoop, a massive fixed rear wing, and an aggressive rear diffuser engineered to maximize aerodynamic efficiency.
Beyond its bespoke bodywork, Lanzante reworked the chassis with race-derived suspension calibrated to manage the increased downforce, while custom center-lock wheels echo the iconic five-spoke design of the original F1 GT. Despite its motorsport roots, the P1 GT offers significantly greater comfort than the track-only P1 GTR through features such as climate control, power windows, carpeting, infotainment, and more supportive seats, making it practical for road use without compromising its performance credentials.
Power comes from McLaren’s hybrid drivetrain, pairing a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with a 131-kW electric motor to deliver a combined 986 horsepower through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the rear wheels. Built around the P1’s lightweight carbon-fiber Monocage chassis, the hypercar combines immense power with exceptional weight savings, creating one of the most capable road cars of its era.
This particular example, identified as Lanzante build number 03, is finished in black over a black leather interior accented by red microsuede inserts. The cockpit retains exposed carbon fiber, racing bucket seats, and harness provisions while incorporating subtle F1 GT-inspired detailing throughout. Showing just 5,484 miles at cataloging, the car has been sparingly driven and carefully maintained.
Produced in only a handful of examples, the P1 GT by Lanzante stands among the most exclusive McLaren creations ever built, offering collectors an extraordinarily rare opportunity to own a road-legal evolution of one of motorsport’s most celebrated endurance racing legacies.
