Best Vintage Car Racing Photo of 2012

Sports Car Digest covered nearly 100 historic car races and rallies in 2012, starting with the New Year’s Day Anti-Football Run and ending with the Historic Grand Prix at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. Though reading over highlights and results of each event and race can be interesting, nothing makes you feel like you’re there like a well-timed action shot. As a publication that annually puts out thousands of photos, the task of narrowing down the most popular pictures of the year can be a daunting one. From a Ferrari 500 TRC on the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance to a Lotus whipping around corners at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, our dozens of photographers captured some truly stunning moments in 2012.

  1. Geez..this is not easy! Like choosing winner of the Miss Universe contest…
Start of the AC Cobra race during the Goodwood Revival (photo: Tim Scott)

  2. In the GTO anniversary year, I had to choose one of those photos and this one was my favorite:
Ferrari 250 GTO/64 at the Goodwood Revival (photo: Julien Mahiels)

  3. Silhouette of the Maserati 250 F at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant (Dennis Gray photo) Take away the Armco in the background, and you are back to the mid 50s. Great photograph…The best in my book, but all are excellent…

  4. I am going to vote three times. Each an image I would like to hang on my wall. Not the car or cars but the image, the eye of the photographer.
In no order.first: Dirk de Jager’s image from Zoute Grand Prix.

  5. The shot “Ford GT40 MK II at the biennial Le Mans Classic” is timeless and shows the speed and majesty of the GT40 on its iconic stage.

  6. Seeing that 512, I can still hear it ho-o-owling down the main straight at the Kyalami 9 hour, what a fabuylous car and sound it was.

  7. My vote is for Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 and Maserati 250F at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (photo: Tim Scott).

  8. The Jumping Jaguar E-type at the Luigi Musso Historic Grand Prix (photo: Peter Lutz), without a doubt.

  9. This is no simple task…but this one really speaks to me. Love the car, the location, the motion and the perfect lighting. A+++
Cunningham C4R heads into the setting sun at the Goodwood Revival (photo: Julien Mahiels)

  10. In a bit in a struggle with myself but I think I have to go for the red E-type Jaguar at the Luigi Musso Historic Grand Prix 2012. Would love to drive that beautiful car. Marvelous photograph by Peter Lutz too.

  11. Ford GT40 MK II at the biennial Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott) – would just love to be able to take a shot of such clarity and wonderful composition!

  12. I love the feeling of motion and speed captured by the fleeting glimpse behind the rush of trees of the Porsche 910 at speed. A great racing photograph.

  13. These are some of the snakes that kept my stress level on HIGH and my whole 250 GTO (s/n 3223GT) crew on our toes throughout the 1964/66 seasons. A fine scene, of intense competitive pandemonium, captured beautifully. Hats off to Tim.
Your photo lacks only one thing to completely blow the viewer away … a SOUND TRACK !!!
“A Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe leads a pack of Cobras during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (photo: Tim Scott)” Page 6

  14. The Alpha Romeo 3000 Disco Volante at Goodwood conveys the beauty of the car, a sense of speed and context that captures the essence of vintage racing…trouble is so do many of the other photos, I like this one though.

  15. I can nearly hear this one…!
Ex-San Remo Rally-winning Audi Sport Quattro S1 at the the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels)

  16. I choose the AH 100S at Goodwood, ruled out all the magnificent shots of single cars because to me they do not fully convey the spirit of cars racing.
    David

  17. From a perspective of photography; my favorite shot is on page 1:
Lotus 24 at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix (photo: Tim Scott)
From a perspective of a vintage racing fan my favorite moment was captured at the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Cobra at Laguna Seca, which was also probably the last shot of CSX 2298 in pristine condition.
A Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe leads a pack of Cobras during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (photo: Tim Scott)

  18. Tim Scott’s photo of the three Cobra’s at Goodwood revival’s Shelby Cup – once in a lifetime shot!

  19. Well, as much as I enjoy the 910, I also wish the photo was just a little crisper. On that note, I now put the beautifully lit and super sharp GT40 #5 at the top of the list.

    1. Don’t know how it let me comment without logging in…the Anonymous comment on the GT40 is mine.

  20. My three pic’s this year are:
    1. Silhouette of the Maserati 250F under the turn 12 bridge at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)
    2. Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 and Maserati 250F at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (photo: Tim Scott)
    3. Porsche 356 Coupe and Cabriolet at the Zoute Grand Prix (photo: Dirk de Jager)

  21. For me, determining a favorite is a competition between the art of the car and the art of driving. As a driver, I’ll have to go with the art of driving this time. The picture that most makes me want to drive is: “Ford Escort MK2 lifts a wheel during the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels)”.

  22. Start of the Goodwood Revival’s Freddie March Trophy Race (photo: Tim Scott)
What a collection of machines and Tim’s photographs are absolutely fantastic

  23. All great !! … But I like …..The two Porsche 356 coupe and cabriolet …. overtaking each ther at the Zoute Grand Prix

  24. What a selection to have to make a choice !
    1. 250F at Mont Tremblant
    2. Cobra at The Corkscrew at Laguna Seca
    3. Auto Union, Goodwood Revival

  25. Choices, choices, choices…

  26. Kenny Brack behind the wheels of the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (photo: Tim Scott)
    absolutely does it for me……………..!

  27. I have to go with the Cobra Daytona Coupe. I think it’s one of the most beautiful cars ever built.

  28. Ford Escort MK2 lifts a wheel during the Eifel Rallye Festival (photo: Julien Mahiels)
Speaks volumes to me. Could hang on ANY wall in my house. Kudos.

  29. The Ferrari 512M (I believe) is not quite an original car in appearance with the garish drivers names plastered on three sides of the car in horribly large type. Having worked at the venues where this car originally competed I can assure you that Enzo Ferrari and his Director of Sporting Activites Dott. Luca Montezemolo would never, never ‘plaster’ the names of their drivers with a trowel on their cars. The owner of this otherwise fine example can decorate his car in any manner he sees fit….but the least he should do would be to honor the historical imperative to get the appearance correct. Not a good photo to honor.

    1. Incorrect, I’m afraid – I suggest you look in Google Images under ‘Ferrari 512M Ickx Giunti’ – there are several period pics which show the livery in period which the car runs now.

  30. Too many choices, but my my pick is the Lotus 24 at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix (photo: Tim Scott)

  31. 1) The wonderful photo of the Maser 250F at Mont Tremblant…
    2) Also terrific photo of the Porsche 935 at La Source Hairpin/Spa.
    3) And the Audi at the Eifel.
Tough call with so many artistic choices, but you did say “racing” photos and to me these best convey the sight, sound and smell of racing.

  32. While all the photos are great eye candy the Silhouette of the Maserati 250F under the turn 12 bridge at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray) stands out for enticing the imagination to see, hear, and inhale that scene.

  33. My Choice from among so many great photos:
The Porsche 935 at famed La Source hairpin during Spa Classic (photo: Jurrie Vanhalle) evokes the spirit of Speeeed.
What a great shot as that Porsche rotates on the apex, it’s tail hanging out and nose pointing toward the exit, stopped in time as the blurred scenery flashes past. Just imagine the sound, tires-wind-engine.
Another picture keeps coming back to me though, so a close second choice is:
The two Porsche 356s, coupe and cabriolet, side by side on the narrow tree lined road at the Zoute Grand Prix.
Ahhhhh, the memories evoked, when passing on similar roads with underpowered cars, a long time ago. Note the car coming toward them in the same lane. Yes, memories.

  34. Tim Scott’s photo of the Lotus 24 competing at the Monaco Vintage GP simply SCREAMS ‘vintage’ to me.

  35. 1. 250F silhouette at Mont-tremblant
    2. Porsche 935 at LaSource
    3. Alfa P3 and 250F
    Great stuff!

  36. Before aero-d, before the rolling billboards: race cars were clean and pure. Even though I drive a Jaguar, my favorite: Lotus-Cosworth 49 driven by Jackie Oliver at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (photo: Tim Scott), on page 2.

  37. It’s gotta be the Ford GT40 at the biennial Le Mans Classic by Tim Scott. That iridescent gold at speed against the blur of the crowd. I can almost hear that MkII scream. Brilliant.

  38. The silhouette of the Maserati 250F, page 4; Alpha Romeo Tipo B and Maserati 250F at Monterey, p.6; Maserati Typo 61 at Algarve, p. 10.

  39. Fantastic, tack-sharp sweep shot of An Alfa Romeo 3000 Disco Volante at the Goodwood Revival. Lavoro Fantastico!!

  40. While I agree with several viewers who selected Kenny Brack in the Daytona Coupe because it’s one of the greatest designs of all time, from a photographic standpoint, I’ll go with the Ferrari 512 at Silverstone-the sense of speed, the rain, it’s truly a terrific photo.

  41. Although the choice was VERY difficult, I think Page 8, Picture #2 of the 100S Healey leaning into the turn represents the “spirit” of racing (while picture #1 on the same page was my second choice) What a great job you folks do in bringing these classic cars to the forefront! Thank you!

  42. My choice is the Lotus 24 at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix (photo: Tim Scott) – the photo makes you feel like you’re on the track competing

  43. Outstanding photo !!!!!
Ford Gt 40 MkII Biennial Le Mans Classic (Photo: Tim Scott)
    Bravo !!!

  44. I think the Auto Union, closely followed by the Ford Escort. The jumping Jag is great, and the group shot of the blue Cobras led by the Daytona. That’s my top four, but they were all great.

  45. My choice is “A Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe leads a pack of Cobras during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion (photo: Tim Scott)” as a Tribute to the Great Legend, Carroll Shelby.

  46. Looks like I am not the only one who has to vote for 3
    1. Page 7 – The Ferrari GTO
    2. Page 8 – The Cunningham C4R
    3. Page 7 – The Ferrari SWB
but even that is just a scratch….they are all great
    thanks

  47. Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 and Maserati 250F at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. One from the 30’s and the other the 50’s ,both keeping a tight grip on turn. Both cars working flawlessly, really cool.

  48. If we are just judging photos, the D Jag at Lime Rock wins hands down. Composition, balance, and, oh yes, the car.

  49. Lighting, focus and composition in motion. Great Photo.
Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage at Algarve Historic Festival (photo: Tim Scott)

  50. This was really hard, So many great photos to choose from.
I vote for the Gold GT40 at LeMans. Still retains the flavor of a period photo, with good composition, color. The pan shot gives great motion while still capturing a sharp image of the car.

  51. Great photos, but to be the best it is essential that there be at least two cars racing close together, in a turn, and close up. Many will simply chose the pix of their favorite car, but by my criteria the choice is clearly Alfa P3 vs. 250F Maser. (Besides, that was a real thrilling race, its not just a faster car overtaking a slower one–Giddings held off the Maser for half the race.)

  52. Start of the Goodwood Revival’s Freddie March Trophy Race (photo: Tim Scott), timeless!

  53. For brilliant composition, this Dennis Gray shot takes the prize.
Silhouette of the Maserati 250F under the turn 12 bridge at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)

  54. My vote – Ford GT40 braves rain during the Algarve Historic Festival (photo: Tim Scott)- Why? Because it was a great race, the GT40 is one of kind and I was there…

  55. My Fav would have to go to page 9, Auto Union Type D at Good Wood. When I first looked at it , right away, the Concord Super Sonic jetliner, minus it’s wings, zooming past me except it seemed to be traveling backwards. So, that’s where the designers of the Concord got their cues!
The rest are all super pics.

  56. Another year of great photos to have seen and to now choose from. The Tim Scott Monaco Historic image of the Lotus 24 is a top seed contender, so is his 5 GTOs at Goodwood, and Jurrie VanHalle’s T70 at Zandvoort, but my vote goes to the Maseratti Silhoutte taken by Dennis Gray at Mont-Tremblant.

  57. The Ferrari 250 in photo #3 on Page #7. Not just the car itself, the photo manages to combine the yellow of the trees, the road and the car into a unified picture. Though some of the other photos had nice shots (Nick Mason’s car at Goodwood), this photo managed to blend everything together.

  58. The Raucous Chevrolet Corvette (photo: Julien Mahiels) stands out like a moving picnic out in the fields among the trees. At speed, while at peace with the French countryside.

  59. Silhouette of the Maserati 250F under the turn 12 bridge at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant (photo: Dennis Gray)
because I have never seen a shot like this before

  60. Ford GT40 Mk2 beaufifully captures theatmosphere of Le Mans from the 60’s…… the speed, the evening under lights.,the perfect lines of this iconic car….simply magic.

  61. 1. Ford GT40 braves rain during the Algarve Historic Festival (photo: Tim Scott)
    2. Tyrell 006
    3. Ford GT 40 at Biennial Lemans Classic

  62. The article on the Porsche 914 was excellent, One question, I own a 1970 Porsche 914-6 and worked at the Porsche dealer as parts manager in thev earlly 70s’. I had 3, 914-6s’ for company demos .. The build quantity keeps going up, your article states over 3000, It was only about 2000 then, I realise that it is one of the most cloned and faked ccars in history, But what is the real number of SIXES produced ??

  63. GT40 MK II at the Biennial Lemans ,Tom Scott photo.Tom captured the speed, the stunning profile of the GT40,and the colorful beauty of racing! An absolutely stunning photo!!

  64. Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage at Algarve. This photo is not only about this fabulous race car but is in perfect focus, nice lite and as well Tim has captured the motion of the wheels in his exposure.Very nice composition, can feel the passion of car and driver in this shot.

  65. Jumping Jaguar E-type at the Luigi Musso Historic Grand Prix (photo: Peter Lutz)
Love the lines of the car, the fact is in action, and how crisp the photo is.

  66. The Lotus 24 picture at Monaco reminds me just how courageous the drivers of the era really were.

  67. The Ferrari GTO tribute! However, the Porsche and Corvette through the trees are probably the two most artistic pics

  68. Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage at Algarve Historic Festival (photo: Tim Scott)
It’s the only one where the entire car is in sharp focus. The decals are a bit fuzzy, but that appears to be decal quality as they do not pop the way many do. Many of the images have really neat composition, but have fuzzy areas (my opinion and no disrespect intended). At least that is the way they appear on the web at the posted resolution.

  69. My vote goes to the Tim Scott shot of the 1957 Ferrari 500 TRC on the Pebble Bch Tour d’Elegance. For the joy seen on the faces of those enjoying the moment.

  70. Being an old friend of Shelby, I have to go with the photo of the Daytona Coupe leading a pack of Cobras at the Monterey event. I gave Shelby credit for jump-starting my career as a photojournalist. I spent more time hanging out at his and Jim Hall’s dealership in Dallas – instead of studying in college -which led to photographing sports car racing throughout the Southwest, and continued for 40 years as a news photographer.

  71. Really, really tough call. Going with the D-Type Jag cresting the hill as a different perspective than most of the photos.

  72. Dozens of shots I’d be proud to say I took. The Hesketh in the wet @ the Silverstone Classic.Fun team, great shot.Steve Park

  73. Lots of great pictures to chose from. I’m selecting the Mercedes-Benz W 154 Silver Arrows at the Goodwood Revival shot.

  74. Porsche 356 Coupe and Cabriolet at the Zoute Grand Prix (photo: Dirk de Jager) – It has all the elements; the beautiful tree-lined road; two modestly powered sports cars, foot to the floor side by side; an on-coming car, lights on, in the distance. Does the Coupe driver keep his foot down, or does he back off? Great photo.

  75. D-type cresting hill at Lime Rock- a unique perspective
” When tires were skinny and drivers were fat!”
Amazing ground clearance for street driving on way to the track- note license plate!

  76. So difficult to choose, all are brilliant in their own way and I have to choose three – greed is a terible thing!
Alfa Romeo TipoB P3 and Maserati 250F at Monterey on page 6
Cobra squabble at Monterey on page 6
356 Coupe and Cabriolet on the Zoute GP on page 10
    I could go on …and on ….

  77. #1 1976 March 761 @ Lime Rock Park
#2 Porsche 910 Through the trees
    # Ford GT40 Braves the rain

  78. I like them all, but Michael DiPleco’s photo of the Cobra kicking up gravel at the Corkscrew screams ‘torque and power’, And the colors Tim Scott captured shooting the Ford GT MKII at the LeMans Classic stand out just a tiny bit more than the others.

  79. Great stuff! A new favorite on just about every page. You couldn’t go wrong with any of them, but I’m going with:
Lotus-Cosworth 49 driven by Jackie Oliver at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (photo: Tim Scott)

  80. This is a tough one. They are all great shots.
My vote goes to the GT40 MK II at the Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott)
As a race photographer I know how difficult it is to get the car in really sharp focus while blurring out the background as much as in this shot.

  81. My favorite photo is of the Maserati 250 in silhouette at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant. I love the contrast of dark and light.
As most others have stated, it was a difficult choice. All of the photos are outstanding.

  82. My clear favorite is Dennis Gray’s “Silhouette of 250F Maserati at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant” followed by “The raucous Chevrolet Corvette stands out against the peaceful French countryside on the Tour Auto Rally” by Julien Mahiels, with third favorite being !957 Ferrari on the Pebble Beach Tour.
Thank you for these wonderful images, to the car owners, photographers and to SCD.

  83. Tim Scott’s photo of the Shelby Daytona coupe & the pack of Cobras at Monterey gets my vote, by a hair over Dennis Gray’s photo of the silhouette shot of the Maser 250F.

  84. My favorite is Jaguar D-Type looks at home during the Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott)
It’s a dreamlike image that feels like it’s moving fast, with everything glowing in early morning or early evening light.
It was hard to choose just one! My second most favorite is right above… Ford GT40 MK II at the biennial Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott)
I guess I just became a fan of Tim’s work.
Lots of other great shots, everything else is a close third place.

  85. The raucous Chevrolet Corvette on the Tour Auto Rally (photo: Julien Mahiels).
i like the corvette but no more than other cars i see on these fabulous pictures. Idon’t want to make races, but only drive my favourite on this road. fields, trees and sun. I can feel it and smell it too … what else?

  86. Tim Scott’s photo of the “Cobra Pack” at Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Excellent image of both 289 and 427 chassis examples.

  87. GT 40 at the Algarve classic………without a doubt !
Tremendous composition and especially the sense of speed. After all, isn’t that what race cars are about ?

  88. Too difficult to choose. All great fotos; but I’ll cast my vote for the Maserati Tipo 61 at Algarve Historic Festival.

  89. The best racing photo is the one of the pack of Cobras at Monterrey. However, I love the Maserati birdcage picture the most.

  90. Ferrari 250 GTO @ Ferrari Tribute .The most Regarded of Classic Car built for what your photo has captured brilliantly.

  91. This is my winner among a group of wonderful selections.
Ford GT40 MK II at the biennial Le Mans Classic (photo: Tim Scott)

  92. 3/4 rear view of Auto Union Type D at the Goodwood Revival. Great photograph of a stunning race car . (photo:Julien Mahiels).

  93. The gold GT40 at the biennial Le Mans classic is without doubt the best pic of the lot all are great but this just wins hands down

  94. Readers chose Tim Scott’s action shot of the Ford GT40 (page 3) at the Le Mans Classic as our best vintage car racing photo of 2012.
The second favorite image was Dennis Gray’s artful capture of the Maserati 250F silhouette (page 4) at Mont-Tremblant, followed by Tim Scott’s picture of the Ferrari 250 GTO Tribute (page 7) during the Goodwood Revival. Thank you for your comments and votes.

  95. All pics are GREAT, but, here are my fav:
    # 1, page 9; The Super Sonic Concord jetliner..er, I mean the Auto-Union Type D at Good -Wood.
#2, page 6; Alfa Tipo BP3 and Maserati 250F. Old and new showing what racing is all about.
#3, page 10; ….”.and they lived happily ever- after, driving of into the sunset holding hands”…… Porsche 356 and Cabrio at Zoute GP.

  96. I’m partial to Dennis Gray’s early morning shot of the Porsche RS60 and his silhouette of the 250F. If you are interested in getting an earful of his secrets he is putting on a workshop on motorsports photography on March 23-24 at Mazda Raceway (Laguna Seca). http://www.f8photoworkshops.com/

  97. Hands down, the GT40 MKII at the LeMans Classic!! What an incredible picture. The only thing that would make it better would be a little flame coming out the tailpipes. Hey, a guy can dream right??

  98. Alfa Romeo 3000 Disco Volante photo: Julien Mahiels. This is what you feel when you drive your Alfa in a country road, unbeatable.

  99. Porsche 356s down the tree lined road- what makes the picture is the headlights coming at them in the left lane while one is passing.

  100. So many excellent photos, how can u pick 1? If you’re a driver the photo that probably says it all is the rear few of the cobra 289….taken from a view-standpoint from which most drivers that raced against this car saw….Shelby’s leavin them in the dust! Congrats to sports car digest and thanks from all the sports car community, you make Thursdays email something to always look forward to! Keep shooting!

  101. Perhaps it isn’t fair, but I tend to quickly look past the photos that have modern track elements…..huge sand traps, guardrails etc. The start shots at Goodwood Revival and Goodwood Festival are always nice photos, but have been done so often that I also look by those.
Now the Escort on the tarmac stage on Eifel, that has most everything for me. I’ll bet the driver is a primarily a gravel jockey, given the car’s position and attitude at corner entry. Power to weight ratio on these cars with a BDA Cossie is frightening.
No surprise then, that the other photos that spoke loudest to me were 1) Porsche 910 through trees…..2) and C3 Corvette on tree-lined road on Tour Auto.
