As the curtain falls on the W16 era, Bugatti has unveiled one of its most exquisite farewell statements yet: the Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘La Perle Rare’, a one-off roadster created through the marque’s Sur Mesure personalization program.
The story of this bespoke hypercar began in August 2023 at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, first met the client behind the commission. What followed was months of close collaboration, with a shared ambition: to create a W16 Mistral that would be as sculptural and refined as it is powerful.
Inspired by Bugatti’s hand-painted “Vagues de Lumière” finish, a technique designed to emphasize the way its hypercars capture and reflect light, the team developed a striking two-tone concept symbolizing the interplay between sky and ground. The final specification features two entirely new bespoke hues: a warm, gold-infused tone across the upper body and a refined warm white enveloping the lower sections
The dividing gold-and-white linework demanded hundreds of hours of painstaking hand-masking and paintwork, underscoring Bugatti’s obsessive attention to detail. Even the diamond-cut alloy wheels receive a specially curated finish that mirrors the body’s pearlescent aesthetic.
Inside, the craftsmanship continues. Carbon fiber elements are painted white, creating a bright, jewel-like cockpit that mirrors the exterior’s luminous character. The door panels feature flowing gold and white linework, while polished aluminum trim, from steering wheel accents to the center console controls, enhances the sense of light and reflection. Warm ambient lighting was carefully integrated to amplify the pearl-inspired theme, bathing the cabin in a subtle glow.
The finishing touch? The name “La Perle Rare,” rendered in Straub’s own handwriting. It appears stitched along the central tunnel, engraved into the bespoke engine cover, and painted beneath the rear wing, a rare designer signature on a Bugatti commission.
In a respectful tribute to the brand’s artistic roots, the legendary Dancing Elephant, originally sculpted by Rembrandt Bugatti, is incorporated into both the cockpit and exterior body panels. The detail links this modern W16 masterpiece to the marque’s early 20th-century design legacy.
With production of the W16-powered Mistral marking the end of an extraordinary engine chapter for Bugatti, ‘La Perle Rare’ stands as one of the most intricate and personal examples yet created. It’s more than a hypercar, it’s a rolling sculpture, a farewell to a legendary powertrain, and proof that when it comes to ultra-bespoke craftsmanship, Bugatti remains in a class of its own.
