Corvette CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo: a glimpse into the future of America’s sports car

At this year’s The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, Chevrolet stunned the automotive world with the debut of two radical new concepts: the Corvette CX and the Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo. While neither is slated for production, both are destined to shape the future design language of Corvette and showcase what happens when engineers and designers push boundaries without compromise.

For more than seven decades, the Corvette has represented the pinnacle of American performance and innovation. The CX and CX.R VGT concepts are the latest, and final, installments in a global GM design exercise, drawing inspiration from Corvette’s past while daring to imagine its future.

Phil Zak, executive design director for Chevrolet, summed it up perfectly: “The CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo demonstrate our design teams stepping away from the constraints of production vehicles and unleashing their creativity. Through this exercise, we’ve added to Corvette and defined the design direction for Corvette moving forward.”

The Corvette CX: A Road and Track Weapon

Designed to be uncompromising on both the street and racetrack, the Corvette CX concept is unmistakably Corvette yet boldly futuristic. Its low-slung profile, fighter-jet-inspired canopy, and signature dual-element taillights reinforce the car’s heritage while pushing into new territory.

Beneath its aggressive skin lies revolutionary tech:

  • Vacuum Fan System generates active downforce by pulling air through the body channels.

  • Active front diffuser and rear wing automatically adjust to maximize grip.

  • Quad-motor all-wheel-drive electric powertrain delivers over 2,000 horsepower with torque vectoring for razor-sharp cornering.

  • A 90-kWh lithium-ion battery is mounted low in the chassis for optimal weight balance.

Inside, the CX offers a true cockpit experience with Inferno Red ballistic textile seats, premium materials, and a windscreen-turned-digital display projecting performance data directly into the driver’s field of view.

The Corvette CX.R Vision Gran Turismo: Racing DNA Unleashed

Chevrolet’s racing heritage has always been intertwined with the road-going Corvette, and the CX.R VGT carries that tradition into the digital age. This track-only vision builds on the CX’s design while dialing performance up to an even more extreme level.

Key highlights include:

  • Aggressive aero package with lower ride height and reduced weight for ultimate racing performance.

  • A hybrid powertrain blending a high-revving 2.0L twin-turbo V8 (revving to 15,000 rpm) with three electric motors.

  • Total system output: a staggering 2,000 horsepower.

  • Finished in the iconic yellow and black Corvette Racing livery honoring 25 years of GT dominance.

Inside, the CX.R swaps luxury for purpose: carbon fiber dashboards, suede-wrapped foam inserts, and racing seats with enhanced head and neck support. It’s a car built for one thing, winning.

The best part? Fans won’t have to wait for a concept car to hit the streets to experience it. Both the Corvette CX and the CX.R Vision Gran Turismo will be available to drive virtually in Gran Turismo 7 later this month, giving gamers and enthusiasts alike a chance to pilot these futuristic machines.

The Corvette CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo are more than just design studies, they’re bold statements about where Chevrolet sees performance going in the next era. Electric innovation, racing DNA, and Corvette heritage all collide in these concepts, proving that the spirit of America’s sports car isn’t just alive, it’s accelerating into the future.
