Driven to Disruption Million Sellers

A dozen cars topped $1 million at RM Sothebyโ€™s Driven to Disruption sale in New York City last week. Leading they way, more or less as expected, was the 1956 Ferrari 290 MM by Scaglietti, chassis #0626, that was built especially for five-time Argentine Word Champion Juan Manuel Fangio to race in the 1956 Mille Miglia. The red Ferrari with the blue and yellow bands around its nose hammered for $28,050,000, ranking it third on the all-time list of automobiles sold at auction. For the record, the first two spots belong to a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold in August of 2014 for $38,115,000, and a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix car that sold for $29,967,886 in July of 2013.

Although a 1962 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato took runner-up honors in New York with a sale price of $14,300,000, the surprise of the sale was the 1964 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Cabriolet (above) once owned by rock and blues icon Janis Joplin that brought in $1,760,000, more than twice the expected price. The auction realized total sales of $73.5 million while enjoying a sell-through rate of 81 percent. The 12 top sellers are listed below. For complete information please visit www.rmsothebys.com
