Launched at the Earlโs Court Motor Show 50 years ago in October 1957, the Lotus Elite captured the attention of the international press for its styling, advanced design and revolutionary glass fiber monocoque construction. Its subsequent racing successes in the hands of the likes of Jim Clark, Les Leston, John Whitmore and Frank Gardner is world renowned, including the unbeaten class wins at the 24 Hour Le Mansโa stunning six years in a row. It has since become one of the significant classics, revered for its style and performance.
Consequently, 2007 will see several events honoring the Elite around the worldโand as you would expect, in the UK they will do it in grand style, with the big Silverstone historic race meeting, July 27โ29, featuring the Elite and including a 50-car parade. In the USA, the Lotus Owners Group (LOG 27) will pay tribute when the faithful gather in Aspen, Colorado, August 24โ27, for the clubโs annual meeting (www.log27.com).
In Australia, the Leadfoots group will have a โGathering of Elitesโ in Goulburn on October 9โ10. This will involve a special dinner on the Tuesday evening before the following dayโs track events at Wakefield Park. This coincides with the Gear Meeting on the 10th of October, which will feature the Elite at the event. Contact Brian Caldersmith (02 9449 1740, [email protected])
