News – HSR Championship Makeover

The World Championship for Makes was one of the several names the FIA adopted for its global sportscar championship through the years, and one of the more accurately descriptiveโ€”along with World Sportscar Championship. It was a championship that embraced the manufacturersโ€™ envelope-advancing prototypes as well as the production-based Grand Touring machines, and together those two categories wrote significant portions of racing history.

Now, in order to represent the โ€œgolden yearsโ€ of Championship of Makes sports car racing more accurately, Historic Sportscar Racing has announced that it will expand its Group 7/Championship of Makes competition category to include โ€œthe production-based sports cars of the 1970s and 1980s on slick tires.โ€ These cars will move from their previous Group 9/IMSA Historic GT home to run alongside Group 7โ€™s FIA Sports Prototypes of the same era, still in their respective classes, just as they did originally.

The change will provide spectators with greater historic continuity, as cars that raced with and against each other back in the day will again be doing so.
