RM Auctions Monterey (2014) – Auction Preview

The RM Auctions Monterey 2014 auction will be held August 15th and 16th at the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center in Monterey, California. RMโ€™s 29th annual flagship two-day Monterey sale will feature 36 cars estimated to sell in excess of $1 million and five estimated to bring more than $4 million.

In 2013, the RM Monterey sale generated $125 million, entering the history books as the highest grossing collector car auction of all time. This yearโ€™s sale is set to eclipse this figure, with a selection of 130 automobiles focused on Ferraris and historic sports and racing cars. Headline consignments at the 2014 RM Auctions Monterey sale include the 1965 Ford GT40 Roadster Prototype; 1964 Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti; 1963 Ferrari 400 SA LWB Coupe Aerodinamico Series II by Pininfarina; 1911 Mercer Type 35R Raceabout; 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale by Scaglietti; 1931 Bentley 8-Litre Sports Coupe Cabriolet by Barker; 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT and the ex-Steve McQueen 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti.

The 2014 RM Auctions Monterey sale presents a stable of 32 Ferraris. Representing more than 50 years of production, the selection spans from a 1953 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupe by Pinin Farina to a 2006 Ferrari FXX Evoluzione. Notable highlights include:

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 by Scaglietti – Estimate $8,000,000 – $12,000,000. Delivered new to Steve McQueen on the set of Bullitt; owned by McQueen for more than four years; Subsequently owned by TV star Guy Williams, of Zorro and Lost in Space fame; Restored by Ferrari Classiche to McQueenโ€™s original specification; Classiche certified in the autumn of 2013; Currently owned by F1, Indy and Le Mans racer Vern Schuppan.   • 1986 March 86C Indianapolis, chassis no. 86C-13, winner of the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and CART IndyCar Championship, it was driven by Indianapolis Speedway Hall of Famer Bobby Rahal and is equipped with its original Indy 500-winning Cosworth DFX V-8 (Est. $1,750,000 – $2,500,000);
  • 1963 Lola Mk 6 GT, chassis no. LGT-2, the last of three examples produced, it is the winner of the 1963 Nassau Tourist Trophy and has been piloted by American racing legends Augie Pabst and Walt Hansgen (Est. $1,500,000 – $2,000,000);
  • 1966 Shelby 427 Cobra, chassis no. CSX 3359, authentic example including original โ€œsunburstโ€ wheels and blue dot tires, has only 1,819 original miles and history since new documented by the SAAC (Est. $1,400,000 – $1,800,000); and
  • 1986 Porsche 962 IMSA GTP, chassis no. 962/F01 (HR3F), owned from new by Hotchkis Racing and raced by the Hotchkis family for decades (Est. $800,000 – $1,000,000 / Video).

  • 1963 Maserati 5000 GT by Frua, chassis no. AM103.064, the first of only two Frua-bodied examples, it was the 1962 Geneva and Paris show car (Est. $2,200,000 – $2,900,000);
  • 1960 Aston Martin DB4GT, chassis no. DB4/GT/0119/L, an original U.S.-delivery, left-hand-drive example purchased new by Chicago sportsman Edward Gaylord (Est. $2,200,000 – $2,600,000);
  • 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV, chassis no. 4942, finished in Giallo Miura with a black leather interior and the recipient of a photo-documented restoration (Est. $1,800,000 – $2,400,000);
  • 1948 Tucker 48, chassis no. 1036, an American legend on wheels formerly of the Bob Pond Collection and equipped with the rare Tucker Y-1 transmission (Est. $1,400,000 – $1,600,000);
  • 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Cabriolet by Sindelfingen, chassis no. 130913, a fully unique commission built for American William A.M. Burden Jr. (Est. $1,100,000 – $1,300,000); and
  • 1974 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale by Bertone, chassis no. 829AR0 001527, a “time capsule” example with one owner from new and showing 4,476 kilometers (Est. $450,000 – $650,000).

In 2013, RM Auctions offered 119 automobiles for sale, with 104 finding a new owner, reflecting a 87.4% sell-through rate. Total sales volume was $124,993,250, inclusive of buyerโ€™s premiums. The average price per car sold was $1,201,858. Top sale went to the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider at $27,500,000, followed by the 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider at $9,075,000 and the 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Saoutchik Roadster at $8,250,000. The RM Auctions Sports and Classics of Monterey event returns to the Portola Hotel and Monterey Convention Center, August 15-16, 2014. The auction preview will be held August 13th through 16th, with the auction taking place the evening of Friday, August 15th and Saturday, August 16th.
