Continuing the stepwise evolution of Ferrari's mid-engine supercar, the 358 introduces several key features into the model range including a 570 bhp direct injection engine and a dual-clutch 7-speed transmission. When the supply of European replacement engines dried up in the sixties many enterprising racers stuffed American V8s into orphaned Ferraris, Maseratis and Jaguars. These modified sports cars extended the usefulness of some old workhorses that were permitted in SCCA and Cal Club racing. Such is the case with our feature car which is one of the oldest surviving Ferrari street rods.

Among all the 250 specials, this unique cabriolet built on 1737GT is one of the best. Not only does it have a custom body, but one fashioned in aluminum that covers a bespoke interior and engine.

A year before the 250 GTO would make its seminal mark, Ferrari gave the SWB its last breath. In 1961, a few of the unbeatable 250 SWB Competiziones got a mechanical makeover. These became known internally as the Comp/61, or SEFAC Hot Rod, and were the ultimate SWB.

Ordering a competition Ferrari in the 60s must have been an exciting prospect. In some cases clients simply got whichever potent car was next to come of the assembly line. It’s doubtful any racing team would prefer to race a convertible, none-the-less many were prepared for international competition and some even saw action at LeMans.

Throughout Ferrari’s history there is a tradition of modifying the standard models into something more exclusive. Luigi Chinetti, Ferrari’s North American importer, made more of these special cars made than anyone else. He had a remarkable sense for what the American market wanted and in 1965 he envisioned this Spyder design.

Detroit (USA), 14th January 2008 - Ferrari has brought two models - the 430 Scuderia and the 599 GTB Fiorano - to the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Also on the stand this year, however, is a biofuel-powered technological demonstration prototype which uses the F430 Spider as a base.

Just as Ferrari embarked on their V6 Formula One program, they debuted a V6 sports car at the 1958 Goodwood Sussex Trophy. Looking like a miniature Testa Rossa, this car was tested as its replacement for the upcoming 3-liter sports car championship.
