Alfa Romeo's racing roll of honour is highlighted by one event, the Mille Miglia, where Alfa has received 11 overall victories, a result that no other marque in the world can claim. The first of these victories was taken in this 1928 Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport at the hands of Campari and Ramponi.

Designed by Vittorio Jano, the 1500 was really never conceived as a race car, more a sports car with a smooth six cylinder engine and ample acceleration. When the first Mille Miglia was raced, the car did well enough to motivate Alfa to make 3000 cars, 200 of which were fitted with a double over head camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain.

Called Super Sports, only ten of the DOHC models were fitted with superchargers for the racing circuits. These supercharged 1500s bridged the gap between the Alfa Romeos Grand Prix and road cars.

In 1928, the 1500 was replaced with the 1750, a more durable car built with the same engineering principles and design. The 1750 went on continue Alfa's Mille Miglia legacy by winning the event in both 1929 and 1930.
