1963 Ferrari 330 LM Berlinetta

For the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans Ferrari prepared four 4-liter prototypes known as the Le Mans Berlinetta (LMB). These were largely based off the successful 1962 330 GTO with revised rear bodywork.

The first car, 4381SA appeared at the 1963 12 Hours of Sebring. The new body lost the rear-haunches of the 250 GTO and featured new rear quarter windows similar to the Ferrari Lusso. For wheel clearance distinctive cut-outs were placed above the rear wheels. The body was designed by Pininfarina, but executed by Carrozzeria Scaglietti.

With nearly 400 bhp on tap Lorenzo Bandini and Mike Parkes much more to contend with than the other six GTOs on the field. Their engine put them in the prototype class with the winning Ferrari 330 TRI/LM and Ferrari 250Ps.

The situation was the same at Le Mans with three LMBs facing the factory prototypes which were much more favored for victory in the prototype class. Maranello Concesionaires finished 5th overall in 4725SA 25 laps behind the winning mid-engine Ferrari 250P.

After Le Mans, all the factory cars were sold off including a fourth backup car which was never raced. 4381SA was sold to Cromograph Roma and rebodied into a movie prop for a feature called Spirits of the Dead.

4453SA which was campaigned by NART at Le Mans continued to race their car on behalf of its owner Mamie Reynolds. It appeared only once more at the Bridgehampton Double 500 painted light gold and fitted with a hood scoop.
