Artist Thom Montanari paints a picture of the first postwar World Champion Nino Farina.
Dr. Guiseppe Farina—we also know him as “Nino,” “Il Dottore,” “The Great Farina” and countless unmentionable names used by competitors and teammates. Although there was nothing subtle about Farina’s aggressive driving style, many aspiring newcomers emulated his way with a car. Rather than seating himself with the steering wheel buried in his chest, Nino prefered sitting as far back from the wheel as the cockpit would permit. This straight-armed driving position was rather stylish and at the same time required a great deal of physical power, because of the hefty cars that he drove. Here, Nino is seen powering the Alfa Romeo Alfetta 159 on to the 1950 World Championship. Classic Farina, all the way.
