Sandown Park Auction Results – Barons

Barons made a strong start to 2010 at Sandown Park on February 9th, with a hall packed with prospective buyers and 70% of the lots finding new homes.

The two headline cars both found new homes, as the magnificent Le Mans-specification 1956 Austin-Healey 100/4 sold for ยฃ43,600, while the 1958 Jaguar XK150 drophead coupรฉ achieved ยฃ40,250.

Really good cars will always find buyers and the Austin Healey could not be faulted. It had been meticulously restored and was beautifully presented. The XK150 was a nice example, which had been extensively restored from a bare chassis, but it had been equipped with non-standard transmission and other upgrades which can put off the purist, and that was reflected in the price achieved. However, there was a lot of interest in it and with a bit of TLC it will make a splendid car.

The 100/4 had undergone a 10-year rebuild, starting as a rolling shell and a box of parts, with the owner photocopying the entire parts manual and replacing or reconditioning every single part. We displayed it on a large mirror, so that those in the saleroom could judge the quality of the work โ€“ even underneath the car โ€“ for themselves.

The โ€œquality always sellsโ€ point was further proved by the outstanding 1997 Aston Martin DB7 coupรฉ in the Prestige section, which sold for a top estimate at ยฃ21,250.

Many of the lots that sold were what could be termed โ€˜driversโ€™ carsโ€™, not necessarily immaculate but in good condition, excellent runners and definitely something that the new buyers will derive a lot of driving pleasure from. These included a bright yellow 1972 Triumph TR6 (ยฃ8,390), a 1964 Series One Jaguar E-type fixed head (ยฃ20,685) and a 1961 Jaguar Mark II (ยฃ14,200).
