The Petersen Automotive Museum will debut a new exhibit featuring 10 custom vehicles, donated from Metallica frontman James Hetfieldโs personal collection. Opening February 1, 2020 in the Bruce Meyer Family Gallery, โReclaimed Rust: The James Hetfield Collectionโ will celebrate Hetfieldโs creativity as a world-renowned artist through his built-from-scratch custom car collection, guitars, photos and memorabilia.
Key vehicles on display will include the 1948 Jaguar โBlack Pearl,โ the 1934 Packard โAquarius,โ the 1953 Buick Skylark โSkyscraper,โ the 1937 Lincoln Zephyr โVooDoo Priest,โ the 1936 Auburn โSlow Burn.โ which were designed by famed builder and television personality, Rick Dore, as well as the 1936 Ford โIron Fist,โ the 1937 Ford Coupe โCrimson Ghost,โ and the 1932 Ford Roadster โBlack Jack.โ Along with the custom vehicles, memorabilia on display will include an ESP Hollow Body guitar and a Mesa amplifier that are painted to match the Buick Skylark โSkyscraper,โ and images displaying the build process of each car and a video of Hetfield talking about the cars.
โ’Reclaimed Rustโ brings together two industries that go hand in hand with artist expression,โ said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. โThis is the first time the Hetfield collection will be showcased to the public and we canโt wait to share the inspiration behind these extraordinary vehicles with the world.โ
Hetfield is a lifelong car enthusiast and views his collection as a form of expression to convey his creativity. Hetfieldโs vehicles assert both a reverence for history and a disregard for convention, standing collectively as a testament to the musicianโs distinctive personality and artistic energy.
The museum will host a ticketed opening reception on January 30, 2020. The reception will be highlighted by a ribbon cutting, a fireside chat with James Hetfield and an auction featuring two limited-edition ESP guitars. Refreshments will be served. โReclaimed Rust,โ sponsored by ESP Guitar Company, will run through October 2020.
