[Book Review] Around the Circuit

Around the Circuit

By David Cross

In racingโ€™s earliest days, most of the participating cars were simply driven to the circuits, which were generally comprised of public roads in any case. As the sport moved onto purpose-built tracks and car designs became more sophisticatedโ€”and unsuitable for pubic thoroughfaresโ€”a need arose for transport of these racing specials. Open trailers and flatbed trucks were among the first devices pressed into this service and the category has since undergone a continual evolution so that todayโ€™s full-service examples boast all the conveniences of home and shop.

The photographs in this book show us how these โ€œtransportersโ€ took many different forms and shapes over time, from modified pickup trucks and panel vans through converted busses to fully enclosed semi-trailer rigs, and even luxury sedans adapted for new duty with truck beds installed. Beyond the transporters, we also find breakdown and recovery trucks, medical vehicles and fire tenders, as well as Pace, Safety and Course cars!

Although brief explanatory essays accompany most entries, this is primarily a photo book showing the featured vehicles either in action or simply in static standby mode, and as such it is a treat for the eyes.
