A Passion for Speed – The life and times of George Abecassis

By David Abecassis

It is always difficult to write objectively and properly about oneโ€™s kith and kin. However well intentioned, it is always jaundiced by childhood memories and life-time recollections of someone you hold or have held very near and dear.

In this instance, David Abecassis, son of George, has complied this tome of facts, figures and biographical record of his fatherโ€™s lifeโ€”from cradle to grave. I say compiled because it is written in a way a barrister would present evidence to a court, which should come as no surprise as that is the authorโ€™s profession.

I found the book very hard going and needed respite between chapters. The author is quite candid in his appraisal of others who played a part in Georgeโ€™s career, particularly Stirling Moss and David Brown, if only he could have been the same in his account of his father.ย  On the positive side, the illustrations and photos give the reader a pictorial background of the life and times of a racing driver of the period.
